Six months ago my husband and I decided to buy a plot of
land on Great Exuma. We had talked at length to the Bahama
Sound representative who had not only sent us a most impressive
information pack including a DVD but had also patiently
answered all our questions relating to the investment potential,
political climate and building regulations.
We wanted to build a two-bedroom holiday home with rental
potential and both agreed that Great Exuma fitted the bill,
so we purchased a plot for only 17,200. In mid-May we set
off to meet with Judy (the Bahama Sound representative) to
see our plot!
Great Exuma exceeded all our expectations - the temperature
was in the eighties, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and
there were miles of white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue
waters and gorgeous villas. Our plot was fantastic - set
on a ridge with glorious valley views and backing onto a
nature reserve and less that a minute's drive from the beach
-we could picture our dream home already.
However, we had the option to change to an alternative plot
at no financial detriment to us, so we went on a tour of
the island to see other plots just to make sure we were happy
with our choice. We headed off towards Little Exuma, where
the plots range from 14,500 to 27,000 - all with stunning
sea views. It was an incredibly peaceful part of the island.
However, Judy explained that this was about to change because
of the interest several International Developers had shown
in Little Exuma.
We were then introduced to Garth Sawyer, a local architect
who indicated he would be delighted to help us build our
dream home. We met with Judy and her husband later and picked
their brains about the rental opportunities, which, apparently,
are excellent in Bahama Sound 18. Judy advised that well-furnished
and landscaped homes could expect to achieve a minimum holiday
rental of US $1,200 per week.
From our perspective this represented a very reasonable
return on our total anticipated expenditure of just under
120,000. After our first day on this beautiful island we
were absolutely convinced that this had been one of the best
investments decisions we had ever made.
