'By the way think the site is great and have been to quite a few auctions St Albans, Watford & Bedford. I am making a nice little second income, but certainly not retiring, am going to take a week off work to check out the midweek sales to see if goods are any cheaper at these.

Rory

Churchill Funeral Barge Up For Auction.

The barge that bore the body of World War Two leader Winston Churchill down the River Thames during his state funeral 40 years ago will go on sale next month and is expected to make over one million pounds.

Havengore, 87 feet (26.5 metres) long and 17 feet wide, entered the annals of history on January 30, 1965 when it carried Churchill's flag-draped coffin past dock cranes with their jibs lowered in mute tribute to the nation's hero.

"This is quite unique. It is a piece of Churchill history," said a spokesman for Sotheby's, which will auction the barge in London on December 15.

Havengore, commissioned in 1954 and launched two years later, had a dual life as a working survey boat in the Thames estuary and a ceremonial transport craft carrying royalty and overseas visitors.

Decommissioned in 1995 and completely restored, the barge now works only on ceremonial occasions -- most recently leading a flotilla of small ships down the Thames in tribute to naval hero Horatio Nelson in September.

Coldplay move to stop fans being 'ripped off'

The group auction their own tickets to stop them falling into the wrong hands

Coldplay have set up their own auction website so fans who are left ticketless don't have to be "ripped off" buying online.

The group say that whenever they announce tour dates, "an enormous amount" end up being sold on via auction websites, and in some cases, "scalper sites".

To combat this, the band are auctioning off some tickets for their forthcoming North American dates, with some of the money being donated to charity.

A statement on the band's official website reads: "Whenever we put our tickets up for sale an enormous amount of them end up being sold on.

"We have given a small number of tickets for the next North American tour to Ticketmaster to auction through a legitimate auction site that they have set up just for Coldplay of which a portion of the proceeds from these auctions will be donated to charity.

"Again this part of our on-going plan to make sure as many tickets get into real fans' hands and to stop scalpers making money and making fans miserable from counterfeit tickets."

Coldplay's next North American tour is set for early next year. Before that, they end 2005 with a massive UK tour in December.

Exceptional Sale of Irish Paintings.

Whyte's array of Irish art coming up soon at the RDS promises to produce the paintings sale of the year. A superbly produced catalogue gives us a taste of the 189 exceptional works, by most of the leading Irish artists of the past two centuries, which are due to come under the hammer.

An eye-catching full length figure subject, 'A Visitor', by Sarah Purser, will probably attract as much attention as it did when the Gorry Gallery sold it nearly twenty years ago.

It was a favourite of the artist's who never offered it for sale until it was sold with the contents of her house after she died in 1943. It is estimated to realise between ?60,000 and ?80,000.

Another artist's favourite is Frank McKelvey's 'The Good Companions', an early work created in 1921 just four years after he left the Belfast College of Art.

Just as with the Purser work McKelvey exhibited the painting but never offered it for sale and it has remained within his family until now, its last outing in public being over seventy years ago.

It could make around ?80,000.

A twentieth century masterpiece by Jack Yeats, 'The Comforter' could make as much as ?200,000.

Having earlier this year set a world record of ?132,000 for a painting by Gerard Dillon, it is no surprise Whyte's have received seven of his works for this sale, including four major oils.

This should make for some really interesting bidding.

The auction takes place in the RDS, Ballsbridge, on Tuesday, November 29 at 6pm.

Galleria

Comhghall Casey, who is steadily attracting attention, is staging his first exhibition in two years with Michael and Pauline Flanagan at The Emer Gallery on the Antrim Road. Over fifty works are on show and the exhibition will run from November 24 to December 3.

Hilary and Leo Donaghey are having a retirement exhibition at Gallery 148, Holywood starting today and running until December 23. Everyone's invited especially the many friends they made over the past eight years.

Around the sales

Morgans: Victorian breakfront wardrobe, 420; Victorian telescopic dining table, 380; rolltop desk, 310; pair of oak bookcases, 180; Georgian sideboard, 170; R Hill, w/colour, 160; carved oak barometer/thermometer, 155; w/colour signed Greer, 150; Victorian side table, 140.

Bloomfields: Diamond cluster ring, 450; electric guitar, 250; diamond bracelet, 250; quantity Country rose china, 180.

Online wine auction launched in the UK.

Recently launched at the London Wine Show in Islington, Cellar21.com is a new 'eBay' style online wine auction that lists alcoholic drinks for sale to both the general public and trade buyers.

Booze is currently not allowed to be sold via eBay and Cellar21 hope to capitalise on this exclusion to establish themselves as a leading drinks auction service in the UK.

The majority of the sellers who have their goods listed for sale on cellar 21 are smaller importers and producers and their wines tend to be 'hard to find', more exclusive labels.

The site claims to offer ease of use and navigation as well as providing a wide variety of wines ranging from a single bottle of 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Annee de la Victoire 1er Cru with a reserve of 2,750 to a case of 6 bottles of Villa Valentina Merlot Del Veneto (2004) starting at only 12.

The site is already proving popular with a number of well known French Chateaux. With cellar 21 they are now in a position to sell direct to the UK public instead of being thwarted by the large supermarket chains that have previously dominated the market. Cellar21.com are hopeful that their service will offer an invaluable service that the UK market has been waiting for.

Cellar21 also announced the charity auction of a wooden case containing a 3 Litre bottle of Chateau Leoville Barton 1995 signed by Oz Clarke. The money raised will be donated to the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

Friends Help Victim Of Diving Accident.

A FORMER Huddersfield man has lost a leg in an horrific diving accident.

Now a fundraising appeal is under way to help 39-year-old Mick Ward.

The father-of-two lost his left leg below the knee and his right one was badly damaged when he was hit by a boat propeller while diving near the Farne Islands off Northumberland on August 13.

He used to live in Dalton and now lives in Loughborough, Leicestershire, with wife Maria and their children, 13-year-old Oliver and Tamsyn, 11.

He still has many relatives living in the Huddersfield area and they have rallied round to help.

They have organised a fundraising evening in Huddersfield just before Christmas.

The event at St Patrick's Centre, Trinity Street, at 8pm on Saturday, December 17, will feature singer Craig Morgan, The Goodfellows group, a raffle, auction and disco.

Members of Huddersfield Nomad Diving Club gave 500 from a Bonfire Night barbecue to the appeal.

It was held at the Dalton home of Nomad member Khanny Mansaf and organised by his wife, Susan, along with Janet McAllister and Margaret Cruikshank, who are married to club equipment officer Mick McAllister and diving officer John Cruikshank.

Khanny said: "Mick was hurt in a freak accident.

"The dive boat was in danger of being swept on to rocks, so the captain made the split-second decision to start the engines and reverse out of danger.

"Unfortunately the boat reversed over Mick and he was caught by the propeller."

His life was saved by a doctor on another boat.

Mick's sister, Karen, said: "He is now back home, but faces another major operation soon."

* Tickets for December's concert cost 4 and are available from Karen on 07917 134488 or Noel Ward on 07768 590951.

The Positive Club

Every time you experience joy, there is one less person feeling pain. Each time you spread joy to another, the positive power of that joy begins to multiply.
There is no limit to how far and wide the joy can spread when you send it out beyond you. There is no telling what goodness will eventually result when you choose to nurture and send forth joy from your life.

To be truly joyful is not a self-centered pursuit. It is one of the most generous things you can do.

For your joy is infectious. The more sincerely you love life, the better life becomes for all those who come near you.

The joy you know will go out beyond you, out into a world where it will truly make a difference. Each moment lived in joy is a brilliance that can light the deepest darkness.

Give your heart the experience of joy. And that joy will expand far beyond you.
