'By the way think the site is great and have been to quite a few auctions St Albans, Watford & Bedford. I am making a nice little second income, but certainly not retiring, am going to take a week off work to check out the midweek sales to see if goods are any cheaper at these.

Regards
Rory

CELEBRITY BOOT BOOST FOR AIDS CAMPAIGN.

A leading health charity has today launched a major online auction featuring Dr Martens boots designed by a host of celebrities to help commemorate the forthcoming World Aids Day.

The star-studded auction in aid of the National Aids Trust features a host of designs from celebrities including Sir Elton John and Zoe Ball.

Charity staff will drop the hammer on the eBay sale at midnight on December 1 as World Aids Day draws to a close.

The boots were originally exhibited seven years ago to support World Aids Day in 1999. Following the event the boots toured the UK as part of a campaign educating the public about HIV and Aids.

The celebrity designers who supported the campaign were: Sir Elton John; Zoe Ball; underground music star Goldie; Herbie Hancock; Luke and Nick Cave; novelist Kathy Lette; actor Joe McFadden; Times cartoonist Jonathan Pugh; the Spice Girls; and the Manchester United team of 1999.

Charity chiefs at the National Aids Trust are hoping the online auction will help to support their efforts to put HIV back on the public agenda during World Aids Day.

Despite record numbers of people living with HIV in the UK, the charity claims people are now less aware of the risks to their sexual health and the realities of living with HIV than they were a decade ago.

The National Aids Trust's camaign "Wise Up. Wear It. Where's Yours?" aims to double the number of people wearing Red Ribbons this year in the UK to two million.

Chief executive, Deborah Jack, said: "These Dr Martens boots were customised and generously donated by our celebrity supporters and have been instrumental in helping us raise awareness about HIV.

"We would now like to pass on these boots to fans and in doing so raise money to help our work."

All proceeds raised through the auction will be used to fund the work the National Aids Trust undertakes to prevent the spread of HIV, improve access to treatment and combat the stigma surrounding HIV and Aids.

To bid for the boots, visit www.ebay.com and type "NAT Dr Martens" in the search bar.

Cars Direct Launches First Internet Auction Site For Consumers.

Cars Direct launches first Internet auction site for consumers

The Cars Direct Group has opened up its unique vehicle auction website to the consumer for the first time, offering the public a chance to buy a wide range of quality used vehicles at trade prices.

With over twenty six years experience in vehicle auctions, Cars Direct was the first company in the UK to recognise the inherent speed and power of the internet as a way of helping the motor trade and fleet operators buy and sell cars more efficiently. Using the latest technology developed in-house, Cars Direct pioneered the ‘hammerless’ auction offering motor trade customers a range of easy and effective ways to purchase cars on-line, providing a real alternative to traditional methods.

Now, for the first time the consumer can also benefit with the ability to log onto the website, cars-direct.ltd.uk and participate in one of several weekly on-line auctions.

Unlike many existing web based car retail operations, consumers can buy with complete confidence from Cars Direct as all vehicles, typically under three years old, are sourced from only the biggest UK fleet, finance and leasing companies. Importantly, all cars featured in the on-line auctions come with a complete description, history and with all the necessary paperwork.

Roger Woodward, managing director, Cars Direct said: "We believe an increasing number of consumers will look to the internet as way of saving valuable time and money when buying their next car. As such we are delighted to open up our unique services to the public who can benefit from our considerable motor trade experience and buy quality used cars at trade prices with complete confidence".

In addition, the website auction allows the consumer the ability and freedom to search, bid and monitor the whole auction process from the comfort of the home or office, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

All bids and transactions are undertaken on a dedicated and robust internet server hosted in secure and safe premises. All transactions and communications are carried out via the internet. Cars are sold ‘as seen’ and come with the balance of the manufacturers warranty, however Cars Direct can offer the consumer refurbishing and valeting services as well as finance packages and extended vehicle warranties.

And for consumers who feel uncomfortable about going down the auction route, Cars Direct also offers customers a unique ‘Fixed Priced Stock Locator’ facility on its website offering a range of selective vehicles, refurbished and ready to go at a fixed price, typically cheaper than forecourt prices. Importantly, as sales to the consumer market increases, Cars Direct has recently introduced a ‘register interest’ feature on its Fixed Price Stock Locator facility so that customers can enquire about the vehicle and be sent additional information before having to commit to a sale.

A Veritable ABC Of Fine Irish Names.

IN the run up to the festive season we will be spoiled for choice when it comes to attending Irish art sales. Of course few will complain, for after the feast comes the famine.

And the month of January will, as usual, be a lean one for sales of most kinds.

Anyway, on Wednesday Dublin-based de Veres puts its offering under the hammer.

What a fine collection of paintings grace its high quality catalogue.

Right across the alphabet flow familiar names like Ballard, Egginton, Flanagan, Gillespie, McAuley, McCaig, Dan O'Neill and many others.

Centre piece to it all is Jack Yeats' 'Blackbird bathing in Tir na nOg' which is estimated to make €700,000.

For the less adventurous bidder there are many others which, while they will go for a lot less, will nevertheless be as well appreciated by their new owners.

Viewing starts today and continues until Wednesday evening with the sale, at the RHA Gallagher Gallery, starting at 6pm.

Galleria

While in Dublin drop in at the Molesworth Gallery, to view Donaghadee-born Elizabeth Taggart's exciting exhibition.

There is much on offer but, for me, the Frida Kahlo-like works are really outstanding.

The Eakin Gallery opened its Christmas show today with a strong collection of exhibits.

Standing well among them is a collection of twelve recent paintings by Tom Kerr, which will please his many followers.

The versatile George Callaghan is well represented with works ranging from Mourne vistas to intense musicians.

This fine exhibition runs until Christmas eve.

H&H Classic Auctions Ends Landmark Year With £800,000 Sale At Buxton.-

H&H has rounded off by far its most successful year to date with an £800,000 sale at Buxton.

A packed hall witnessed a fine selection of 91 collectors’ cars come under the hammer of H&H’s Managing Director Simon Hope. Of particular interest were the superbly presented Rolls-Royces of the Brian Brotherton Collection, the prince of which - a stunning grey and red 1927 Phantom I Open Tourer - made £62,350. The 1937 25/30 Landaulette fetched £40,850, and the 1930 Phantom II Sedanca De Ville and 1937 Phantom III Sports Saloon £39,775 apiece.

The sale had long since assumed something of a Rolls-Royce theme and the delightful cream and black 25/30 Sedanca De Ville from another source found a new home for £40,850, while the cream and brown 1932 20/25 Limousine drew £19,350. A Shadow and a Corniche also changed hands during this easy-flowing 3.5-hour auction.

The Lagonda of the same period rightly caused considerable interest. A 1932 2-litre supercharged low chassis fabric-bodied Tourer, it offered impeccable provenance, including participation in the 1939 RAC Rally. Resplendent in green with immaculate red interior, it sold for £58,050.

For a diminutive yellow two-seater, the 1927 Lombard AL3 GL/R Drophead Coupe certainly caused more than its share of excitement. Ably balancing nine telephone bids against considerable interest from within the sale room, Simon Hope eventually settled for £34, 950 - nearly three times the car’s estimate!

Among the competition cars finding new homes were: a fine-looking John Chatham-prepared 1966 Healey 3000 rally car (£30,100); a 1985 MG Metro 6R4 (£23,115) and a 1968 Morgan Plus 8 Racer (£18,275). Previously part of the Donington Collection, but a long way from being a competition car, the 1886 Benz Replica also fetched £18,275.
Child’s play for £2,200

The automobilia sale of the previous day was especially well attended and there was an undercurrent of excitement throughout the processing of no less than 550 lots.

The Bugatti Type 55 child’s car was on the money at £2,200, as were the Whisper, Bentley Winged B and Hispano Suiza Flying Stork mascots, that made £1,045, £660 and £1,045 respectively. The Guiseppe Farina winner’s medal from the 1953 German Grand Prix grossed £2,200. The biggest surprise was caused by the radiator grille from a Morgan Three-Wheeler, which fetched five times its estimate at £330.

The next H&H collectors’ car sale will be held at the Centaur Building, Cheltenham Racecourse on February 20/21 2006. The company’s first dedicated cycle/motorcycle auction will take place in conjunction with the Shepton Mallet Bike Show on February 11/12.

Auctioneer and colleagues walk free as crime spree case collapses.

THE case against an auctioneer accused of trading in stolen goods as part of a £30m antiques crime ring has collapsed.
Anthony Green, aged 46, who owns Flogg It auction house in Catford, south east London, walked free from court along with co-defendants Gillian King, 50, Daniel Knight, 51, and Cyril Charles, 78.

The prosecution offered no evidence and the jury returned not guilty verdicts on all charges on the directions of Judge Robert Prendergast at the Inner London Crown Court.

The four were arrested earlier this year following a two-year investigation in which police seized valuable paintings, silverware, pottery and furniture allegedly taken from country houses and galleries across the country. At least some of the raids had involved violence, with the victims left traumatised.

The police went on to conduct a roadshow of £500,000 worth of recovered items in order to trace their original owners.

One victim was thought to be Petworth silver dealer Nicholas Shaw, who suffered a £1m burglary in July last year, when thieves slashed tyres of police patrol cars at the local police station before removing the grille in a violent raid at the shop in the early hours of the morning.
