40% OFF PROPERTY WITH THE BLESSING OF THE
TAXMAN!
www.hotpropertyinvestor.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A cheque from former Beatle John Lennon to the UK's Inland
Revenue is expected to fetch £1,500 (€2,200) at auction.
Selling the item is Lindi St Clair, aka Miss Whiplash, a
former madam who once stood for Parliament as leader of the
Corrective Party, campaigning for more liberal sex laws.
Ms St Clair, now a duck farmer in Risbury, Herefordshire,
bought Lennon’s cheque for £4,800 (€7,088) at an auction
in 1988.
It was an apt purchase, as she was engaged in a tax battle
at the time over her “immoral earnings”.
The item had been expected to sell for £400 (€590) but Ms
St Clair refused to back down in a bidding war with the Hard
Rock Café.
In the end the restaurant was beaten into submission by
the wealthy madam, then living in London.
Two years later, it was Ms St Clair’s turn to surrender.
Cracking the whip on that occasion was the Inland Revenue
– who declared her bankrupt.
Having fought her way back from bankruptcy to become a registered
poultry keeper, Ms St Clair has decided she no longer wants
the cheque, which was signed by Lennon on January 23 1968
on a District Bank Limited form and made out for £6,946 (€10,252).
Having paid over the odds for it, she is preparing to take
a heavy loss.
“I don’t want it any more. I had my fun with it when I bought
it,” said the 53-year-old.
“Nowadays it’s a nuisance having to keep it safe.
“Seeing as it’s the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death,
it could do all right, but I really don’t mind if I make
a loss.
“When I bought the cheque I was earning a million pounds
a year so I could afford to throw away that sort of money.
“Now I’m older and semi-retired, I do not need all those
frivolous assets. I’m getting rid of everything bit by bit.”
Chris Albury, of the Dominic Winter auction house in Swindon,
Wiltshire, where Ms St Clair grew up, said: “Realistically
this cheque should make £1,500. However, with its incredible
provenance there’s no saying where the price might end up.
“Ms St Clair is prepared to take a crashing loss, but, with
it being sold in her home town on the 25th anniversary of
John Lennon’s death, she’s got a sporting chance of getting
top price in today’s market conditions.”
The cheque will go on sale at the Swindon auction rooms
at around 2.30pm on December 14.
John Lennon was shot dead in New York on December 8 1980.
George Harrison’s track, Taxman, on the 1966 Beatles album
Revolver spoke of the band’s own ill-feeling towards the
Inland Revenue.

Online Auctions Becoming A Global Obsession.
No one, as far as is known, has successfully sold his or
her soul on eBay but the transaction can only be a matter
of time. A quick trawl of news from what is called "the
eBay community" reveals that almost anything can be
flogged through an Internet auction.
Last week, an Oxford undergraduate offered his dignity on-line
and managed to sell this "totally unique, one-off item",
complete with a certificate of ownership, for £67.
In America, ready-made meals that the army had been handing
out to hurricane victims are already on eBay.
'I'd rather be bidding than dating'
Not to be left out, China, the sleeping giant of the new
capitalism, has seen babies apparently being offered online
at a going price of $3 450 for boys and $1 600 for girls.
The behavioural fallout from this new craze for direct buying
and selling has been profound.
"I'd rather be bidding than dating," an enthusiast
of the website told one newspaper.
Another woman revealed that buying on the Internet was taking
over her life, that she had to leave the table during dinner
parties in order to make a bid, but felt powerless to do
anything about it.
"'What am I going to bid?' is one of the first things
I think about when I wake up," she said.
Something rather peculiar is going on here, and it is not
just caused by greed or the love of a bargain.
Those hooked on eBay confess to buying things even when
they are not needed, and go on chat-lines to swap exciting
stories about their latest deals. The well-oiled propaganda
machine that supports eBay suggests that trading online provides
an escape from the wage-slavery of a job, and there are plenty
of stories about people earning a good living from it.
But, clearly, the obsession is more than a matter of money.
The business of bidding, of going to the post office to buy
a postal order, sending and receiving parcels from around
the world, seems to offer excitement to the bored, companionship
to the lonely and even psychological succour to the needy.

The World's Very First Christmas Card Has Sold At Auction
For ...£8,800 FOR XMAS CARD
THE world's very first Christmas card has sold at auction
for £8,800. The hand-coloured card was commissioned by Sir
Henry Cole in 1843 and cost one shilling.
It shows a typical family Christmas dinner but sparked moral
outrage because Victorians thought children were drinking
wine in the picture. Most of the 1,000 cards printed were
hunted down and burned. The masterpiece was bought by card
enthusiast Jakki Brown at auction in Devizes, Wilts.

Holiday homes to take off
Simon Lambert, This is Money
THE number of Britons buying holiday homes abroad is set
to double over the next five to seven years.
Changes in the way pensions are organised will let people
invest their savings for retirement into residential property,
wine, fine art and collectibles, allowing them to take advantage
of personal pensions tax breaks.
At present around 1.4 million people own a second home overseas,
and next April's changes in pensions regulations, dubbed
A-Day, are likely to lead to more purchases, according to
a report from property company Avanti International Developments.
The changes to self-invested personal pensions (Sipps) will
mean the pension pot can be used to invest in a second home.
Saving money into a Sipp attracts the same tax perks offered
by any authorised pension scheme.
This means a 22% basic-rate taxpayer putting £78,000 into
a Sipp has it topped up by the taxman to £100,000. Under
the new rules a higher rate taxpayer could pay £60,000 into
a fund, have it topped up to £100,000 and use the cash to
invest in a holiday home.
Avanti told the Association of British Travel Agents annual
convention in Marrakech, Morocco that the current value of
UK overseas property ownership is around £23bn.
It said many travel agents were also becoming estate agents
by putting interested clients in touch with overseas property
companies and between 2003 and 2004, the number of UK families
owning a second property abroad increased by 20%.
Emigration to Spain represents 15% of UK outbound emigration
and 54,000 people moved from the UK to Spain last year, while
30% of all Britons who re-located abroad last year were over
60 years old.
Under the Sipps rules any increase in the value of assets,
or any income they generate will be tax-free inside the Sipp,
but where a Sipp owns a property that saver intends to stay
in, they must show they pay a market rent to use it. Assets
inside a Sipp cannot be realised until the investor is aged
50 at the earliest.

6 April 2006 could be the most
important day of your life if you've ever dreamt of making
your fortune in property. It will mark the most radical reform

A.Day.
Safeguard your future with bricks

After this date you will be
allowed to put property into your pension for the very first
time. Also, even better, you can receive up to 40%
off any commercial or residential property you purchase ˆ all
with the blessing of the taxman.
Buy property at 2001 prices ˆ Courtesy
of a Self-Invested Pension
Presently, the way to own property
in a pension is through an insurance company property fund.
