INTERNET: Get going, going, gone on eBay
HAVE you been given un-wanted Christmas presents and don't
know what to do with them?
An Introduction to eBay course is being held at Peterborough
College of Adult Education, in Brook Street, city centre,
next month which will teach you how to use the website well.
Novices can learn how to register with the site, how to
buy and sell items and what to watch out for.
The course will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2006, from
10am, and costs £11.
Jackie Hall, market development manager, said: "eBay
is one of the most popular internet auction sites in the
world. Millions of people buy and sell items on it every
day.
"Many people buy items at a fraction of the retail
price on eBay and sell unwanted items to earn a bit of money.
"This course will help people find out more about eBay
and how to avoid making errors."
The course is expected to be especially popular after the
festive season, as many people will have been given Christmas
presents they want to sell, or are looking to sell items
to earn some extra cash at this time of year.
eBay allows users to buy and sell a huge variety of items,
from CDs, DVDs, furniture, cars, jewellery and clothing,
to more obscure items such as specialist fishing equipment,
retro fashion and football sticker books.
The site's motto is: "Whatever it is, you can get it
here."
Jackie said: "eBay is a great site to visit if you
want to buy or sell items and has become very popular over
recent years.
"There are some fantastic bargains to be had, but unfortunately
some people have no idea how to use the site or what to look
out for.
"This is a basic course to get rid of the fear that
some people have with using the site. It is a basic course,
which is easy to understand and covers everything you need
to know."

Will Bennett On Client Services At Auction Houses
The auction world has undergone a great transformation over
the past three decades. In the mid-'70s, London salerooms
sold lots priced in guineas mostly to dealers who had looked
through catalogues with few pictures, no pre-sale estimates
and little background information.
The British art market's international attitude was illustrated
by one senior auction-house executive who binned a letter
bearing a French stamp without even opening it.
Today, the three biggest auction houses - Sotheby's, Christie's
and Bonhams - all operate worldwide, produce glossy colour
catalogues packed with pictures and research and containing
estimates that may or may not turn out to be accurate. The
biggest change of all is that the salerooms have moved from
being wholesalers to retailers. Dealers are still major buyers,
and sometimes sellers, but much of the auction houses' time
is now spent wooing private clients.
It was this, and also probably concern about fierce competition
from a resurgent Christie's, that lay behind an announcement
by Sotheby's in London last week. Henry Wyndham, who has
been Sotheby's European chairman since 1997, is to share
his duties with Lord Poltimore, until now chairman of 19th-century
European, Victorian and Modern British paintings. Wyndham
is keeping the title of European chairman and, while continuing
to deal with some British clients, will concentrate on continental
countries.
Poltimore becomes UK chairman and will spend 70 per cent
of his time running the company's business in Britain while
continuing some of his current work in Russia and Scandinavia.
This has led to speculation that Wyndham is scaling down
his role at Sotheby's and might even be leaving, but he denies
this.
"I am sticking around. I will still be here," he
says. "It is too big a job for one person."
The new job-sharing arrangement reflects the fact that where
auction houses once largely relied on whatever was brought
in for sale, senior executives now spend much of their time
travelling to drum up business. Poltimore estimates that
there were only four or five weeks last year when he was
not on the road on the behalf of Sotheby's. Wyndham says
that in an average year he spends between 60 and 100 evenings
networking.
Much of this effort is devoted to building long-term relationships
with art owners and their families, who will, hopefully,
sell through people they have got to know. The value of this
was demonstrated last year when Christie's sold the collection
of the late Portuguese businessman Antonio Champalimaud for
almost £39 million, while Old Master paintings auctioned
by Brenda, Lady Cook fetched £9 million. Sotheby's was not
invited to tender in either case.
However, most major auction consignments are now decided
after contests between Sotheby's and Christie's ranging from
informal chats with clients over a cup of coffee to full-scale
marketing pitches promising exhibitions, hardback catalogues,
evening sales and financial guarantees.
Putting together an auction of Impressionist and Modern Art
involves a lot of travel, a good contacts book - and luck.
There was never any doubt, for example, that Joan Miró's
L'Oiseau au plumage déployé vole vers l'arbre argenté, expected
to fetch £4.5 million to £6.5 million in London on February
7, would be auctioned by Sotheby's. It belongs to Anne Marion,
wife of the company's former top auctioneer John Marion.
But auction houses now spend almost as much time getting
to know buyers as they do sellers, particularly in emerging
markets. Poltimore will soon be off to Russia to talk to
some of Moscow's new rich about a collection of paintings
by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, to be sold by the shipping
magnate Fred Olsen at Sotheby's in London next month.
Initially, Russians who made fortunes in the post-Soviet
era concentrated on buying their own country's art, but now
they are spreading their wings.
"One key new buyer with a big chequebook can make a significant
difference to the market," says Wyndham. So the houses
now have departments devoted entirely to "client services" and
senior staff fan out across the world to wine, dine and charm
those who could make the difference between triumph and disappointment
in the saleroom.

Christie's to Sell Partridge's Furniture, Art for $10.6 Million.
Christie's International, the world's largest auction house,
is buying commissions by bankrolling the takeover of Partridge
Fine Arts Plc, a furniture and art dealer whose sales were
hurt by changing fashions and trends in tourism.
The agreement passed a hurdle yesterday as Partridge shareholders
voted in directors including Mark Law, leader of the acquiring
group, and David Mellor, a former U.K. arts minister. A 51
percent purchase of London-based Partridge should be completed
next month, allowing Christie's to auction assets in May,
said Brian Stockbridge, an adviser to Law's group.
Christie's has put a low value of 6 million pounds ($10.6
million) on the sale of Partridge's furniture and art, which
is scheduled for New York. The proceeds will be used to repay
Christie's for a 4 million-pound loan to Law's group. Christie's
also will earn commissions, normally 20 percent on the first
$200,000 of each lot's hammer price, and 12 percent on the
rest.
``Christie's has worked to assist in creating a solution
for the future of Partridge through this innovative financial
arrangement,'' the auction house said in a statement e-mailed
to Bloomberg News. ``The deal reflects our commitment to
the future of this highly important member of the art trade.''
Christie's, owned by the French billionaire Francois Pinault,
has overtaken Sotheby's Holdings Inc. partly by gaining such
sales. Auction totals for 2005, which Christie's may announce
this week, will pass $3 billion, Chief Executive Officer
Edward Dolman said on Jan. 5. Sotheby's totals will be a
bit more than $2.7 billion, William Ruprecht, Sotheby's chief
executive, told Bloomberg News on the same day.
Fewer Visitors
Partridge, founded by the Partridge family in 1911, sells
English and French antique furniture, art and silver on London's
New Bond Street. In February, it reported a loss for 2004,
citing a lower U.S. dollar and fewer visitors to London,
and said it was in talks that might lead to a takeover offer.
Law, who is now Partridge's executive chairman, is a dealer
in English porcelain who has been selling antiques for 20
years, according to an e-mailed statement today. Mellor,
who will be a non-executive director, is a business consultant
and broadcaster, with his own program on Classic FM radio,
the statement said.
Partridge's shares have dropped 26 percent in a year, cutting
the market value to 9.6 million pounds. Through Amor Holdings
Ltd., the Laws group is offering 4 million pounds for 51
percent of Partridge. Holders could get extra money depending
on the proceeds of Christie's auction, and Amor has committed
to buy the remaining shares within four years, Stockbridge
said.
The auction isn't a prelude to liquidating the antiques dealer,
he said. ``The plan is to allow the business, the name and
the heritage to go forward.''
