"The reason you have instincts
is so that you can trust ‘em!"

So you’re chatting away to a colleague, listening actively to what she’s saying, nodding at the appropriate moments, smiling and furrowing your brow in rapport response to her facial movements …

BUT

Somewhere inside (and you can’t quite figure where) there’s a twinge, an itch, a frisson disclosing something just isn’t quite right.

Had this happen?

Yes!

You’re negotiating a deal – smiling inwardly at the ploys, tactics and subtle manoeuvres you’re hearing - and employing…

BUT

Out there from back and left of your head a silent voice scratches a warning on your almost conscious mind. “Be careful!”

Had this happen?

Yes - It’s your sagacious friend and mine – instinct.

So from whence did this instinct come?

Perhaps from our days a’hunting and a’fishing and a’tracking those woolly mammoths and the sabre-toothed trout in the valleys, hills and rivers from the crucible of man’s dawn!

We used instincts then – in every moment.

But now – maybe we’ve allowed them to slip unnoticed into the backroom of our humanness.

Let’s drag ‘em out, dust ‘em up and start being more instinctive – again.

With paranoia shoved firmly onto the back-burner of consciousness – ask yourself:

Why did she say that?
What did he mean by that comment?
How do I feel – really feel – about this?
What’s my gut tell me? (It cost a fortune – might as well use it!)

You know – I look at communication somewhat like a leaky hose. The main gush arrives full force – soaking the recipient in persuasion and sometimes eloquence.

BUT

The important little pieces and bits leak out of the hose every few inches (sorry; centimetres).

When our ‘instinct’ is fully and relaxedfully tuned - we see, hear and feel those crucial little leaks.

They betray or support the full stream.

And we should trust them – they’re instinct.

One way I use my instinct is to sit early morning with a pad and pen – answering the supposedly ‘oh so simple’ question:

“ What am I thinking?”

And then letting the ink flow by its own volition, onto the waiting lines. It’s spooky, scary and such a cathartic experience – I’m letting my ‘instinct’ have full rein.

Go on – trust me - try it!

So:

Let’s listen more instinctively
Let’s act more instinctively
Let’s answer ourselves more instinctively

After all – the reason you have instincts is so that you can trust ‘em!
