News
Today we wanted
to bring you up to date on the huge GAUK overhaul. We are
midway through a series of investments in development of
superb
new features
and enhancements to the site to help you get the most from your
auction experience... and to help track down those bargains!
Many of the
features are suggested by members and people who contact us at
the site - we listen and consider every suggestion and if we
feel it will compliment the site we get it programmed. If you are
a member just log in to start using them, if not then simply
join today and log in straight away.

***NEW
FEATURE*** - Bi-Weekly
publication of the free newsletter.
Unfortunately, in the past, because the newsletter
came out on a Friday there we sometimes auctions
that had occurred during that week advertised.
Now we have managed to develop another edition
at the beginning of the week to help avoid this
and bring you much more news... Of course, members
get to hear about everything as soon as we do!
|
 |
***NEW
FEATURE*** - Another
fantastic new feature was completed this week. EMAIL
AUCTIONEERS This
feature allows you to e-mail all auctioneers
of a specified category your requirements.
If
you can't find what you're looking for simply choose
a group of auctioneers who are most likely to deal with
your requirement and send a polite request to them. Depending
on the area of interest you may e-mail over
100 auctioneers at the click of a mouse
|
 |
***NEW
FEATURE*** - Also
finished this week was an addition to the auction
calendar -
It used to work fine, by choosing your desired date
it would list everything on that day but we have
now added the facility to choose a whole month to
view all auctions in that month in a clear and easy
to use view.
|
 |
***NEW
FEATURE IN DEVELOPMENT*** - Coming
soon. LIVE

spider software scours the entire web 24/7 and the
millions of news pages therein for any UK Auction
news. It then feeds you all that Government Auctions
UK information right here in real time.

FEATURE IN DEVELOPMENT*** - AUCTION
RESULTS We are currently uploading hundreds of
past auction results into a new system which will
enable you to
see what items ACTUALLY sold for. Instead
of applying a guide (guess)
price for your lots or items you wish to purchase
you'll be able to search thousands of past lots and
check what they sold for.
After
all, something is only worth what someone HAS paid for it! |

Pope's
Old Car Auctions for Nearly Quarter Million!
Pope
Benedict XVI's former car has sold for nearly a quarter of
a million dollars after an Internet auction that saw bids
rocket in the space of a few hours, organizers said late
Thursday.
The highest-winning
offer for the 1999 model metallic grey Volkswagen Golf when
bidding closed was just under 189,000 euros ($244,000).
Organizers
eBay Germany said the sale had been validated. The new owner
is an online casino that has paid high prices for novelty
auctions in the past
--------------------------------------------
Volume
and value of UK M&A deals drop by a third
The number and value of mergers and acquisitions in the
UK by UK companies in the first quarter of 2005 has decreased
by a third compared to Q4 2004, despite the average Q1 2005
deal size remaining broadly in line with that of Q4 2004, according
to the latest statistics published today by the Office of National
Statistics and analysed by Grant Thornton Corporate Finance.
(The number of deals in Q4 2004 was 210 compared to 141 in
Q1 2005, and the value of all M&A activity was £5.3 bn
in Q4 2004 to £3.4 bn in Q1 2005.)
The value of acquisitions in the UK by UK companies presents
a mixed picture. Transactions between company groups has increased
by 14% (£1.868 bn in Q1 2005
from £1.637 bn in Q4 2004), but M&A of independent companies has more than
halved (falling 59% to £1.497 bn in Q1 2005 from £3.664 bn in Q4 2004). In
contrast, the number of acquisitions in the UK by foreign companies is stable,
showing a slight increase of 8% (36 in Q4 2004 and 39 in Q1 2005).
"Whilst it is disappointing that deal values and deal volumes have dropped
during the first quarter of the year, foreign companies are still actively pursuing
investments in UK companies. Looking more closely at UK acquisitions by UK companies,
the downturn in deal values and volumes is evidence of a cautious market. This
could be down to several factors. Rising oil prices, and a fragile US economy
have contributed to a deteriorating international backdrop. Closer to home, the
imminent general election and a widely expected hike in interest rates have added
to a sense of uncertainty, which is having a knock-on effect on nervous consumers
and adversely affecting UK M&A activity," said David Brooks, head of
M&A at Grant Thornton Corporate Finance.
"Banks and hedge funds are wielding considerable influence over deal activity
levels and remain a force for corporate restructuring. What's more, private equity
remains a major driver in sustaining deal flows. Having lightened their portfolios
with some lucrative exits in 2004, VCs are now intent on aggressively scouring
the market for new investment opportunities. Oversubscribed funds and a liquid
debt market is ensuring that the private equity sector is buoyant. This is especially
true for the mid-market, where private equity continues to fuel a good proportion
of mid-market deals."
"A number of sectors are likely to make their presence felt in 2005, such
as healthcare, support services and financial services. In particular, we expect
to see increasing consolidation in the food sector and other basic industries,
and growing opportunities in outsourcing, in line with the government's agenda
to transform public services."
"Consumer confidence will be a key factor post the general election. We
are receiving mixed messages about the future direction of house prices, which
may impact on the housing industry further down the supply line. Furthermore,
the negative sentiment amongst the retail industry may translate into fewer deals
as retailers concentrate on sustaining profits as opposed to expansion. The administration
of Allders and Courts, and the collapse of the LK Bennett sale and numerous profit
warnings is evidence of the underperformance of this market," Brooks continued.
"The relative scarcity of quality companies to buy,
the prevalence of auctions and the availability of debt is ensuring
that it is still very much a vendor's market, where buyers are
prepared to pay handsome prices for strategically important businesses.
This is creating competitive trading conditions in the mid-market
and beyond. The next three quarters of the year will prove testing
for M&A activity due to inflationary pressures and the uncertainty
over fiscal policies post the general election. A rise in National
Insurance contributions or interest rates would impact heavily
on corporates and may prompt businesses to put deals on hold until
the economic outlook is clearer. On a positive note, I would also
expect a continuing focus on transforming deals such as that we
are witnessing with the competing bids for Allied Domecq," Brooks
concluded.

Travelling
artist Leo returns to exhibit
CO Down
artist Leo Casement's thirst for travel keeps him constantly
on the move.
But in between he takes time to mount an occasional exhibition of his exceptional
work.
Earlier this year he was in Downpatrick where he successfully displayed a range
of recent paintings.
Then he was off to Spain where he wintered for a time before returning to his
Killyleagh home.
Now another exhibition, 'Movement in Colour' is running in Downpatrick. This
time, however, the paintings are being displayed in the prestigious St Patrick
Centre.
"It is a smaller exhibition concentrating mainly on horses but including some
of my 'vertical fields' and 'musicians,'" Leo tells me.
"Soon I am
off to London for a time and after that I will be domociled for
a while in France, near the Spanish border.
"There I will
again be experiencing the easy-going village life and of course
the light which is essential to my painting."
Works in his current exhibition range from £500 to £1,000 each.
Whyte's sale
Dublin-based Whyte's maintained their continued run of
record-breaking art auctions, with their recent sale grossing over
over €2.5m.
Gerard Dillon's
'Girl Hiding' featured on the catalogue's front cover made a
world record price of 132,000 euro and was sold to a prominent
collector
in Northern Ireland.
A Dublin collector paid €205,000 for Jack B Yeats 'Forgive Him', and a Galway
collector parted with €130,000 for the same artist's 'Christmas in Henry Street'.
Evie Hone's
'Stations of the Cross', made €42,000
Paul Henry's 'Threatening Rain', sold to the Irish trade at €62,000 while Harry
Kernoff's 'Currachs Connemara', went for a top estimate of €60,000 to the same
Northern collector who bought the Dillon.
Around the sales
In Morgan's a seascape by JE Meadows went at £3,300 while an attractive walnut
breakfast mirror door wardrobe made £1000.
Other prices
included: Victorian telescopic dining table £1,000;Edwardian display
cabinet, £580; Duchess dressing table, £500; German regulator clock £500;Geo
inlaid secretaire chest £460 antique hall table, £390; sandstone trough £340;
writing table, £236.
At Bloomfield's:
display cabinet, £250; old gun £245: Belfast Georgian decanter £240;
Vic whatnot £170; Beswick dog, £150.
------------------------------------------------------
The great
smash and grab
Italy is a treasure trove of buried antiquities. But
now they are being systematically plundered by illegal tomb-raiders,
who operate with virtual impunity. Rose George follows the
loot from the hills of Lazio to London's thriving black market
In an ordinary living-room in an ordinary, small Italian town,
a young man shows off an ashtray. "Nice, isn't it?" says "Gianni", who prefers not to reveal
his real name. The "ashtray" is a terracotta-coloured dish, painted around
the rim, cracked and repaired. It looks nothing special, but it is, because
it's about 2,600 years old, because it was looted at night from a tomb in a
field nearby, and because by keeping it on his mother's sideboard, Gianni and
his mother are criminals.
The
Positive Club
Attitude Determines Attitude
I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock
strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today. I am important.
My job is to
choose what kind of day I am going to have.
Today I can
complain because the weather is rainy or I can be
thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.
Today I can
feel sad that I don't have more money or I can be glad
that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and
guide me away from waste.
Today I can
grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am
alive.
Today I can
lament over all that my parents didn't give me when I
was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be
born.
Today I can
cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that
thorns have roses.
Today I can
mourn my lack of friends or I can excitedly embark
upon a quest to discover new relationships.
Today I can
whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for
joy because I have a job to do.
Today I can
complain because I have to go to school or eagerly
open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.
Today I can
murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework
or I can feel honored because the Lord has provided shelter for my
mind, body and soul.
Today stretches
ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I
am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.
What today
will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of
day I will have!
