Pearse's
Letter Hits Huge Price
By Michael Drake
AN earth-shattering price was paid for the rare Padraig Pearse 'surrender letter'
when it came up for sale at Adams auction in Dublin.
The fact someone is prepared to pay almost half a million pounds for a document
relating to part of Ireland's turbulent history must tell us something about
the world of collecting.
Some, however, will find it surprising a government agency in the Republic did
not purchase it for the nation's archives.
The letter was bought by a telephone bidder somewhere in Europe on behalf of
an unnamed buyer. So it is not known whether or not the document will remain
in Ireland.
It was a night too when full recognition was paid to the work of Northern Ireland
artist Dan O'Neill. His 'Red Bow' created a world record price when it sold for £127,200
against a high estimate of £55,000.
The Red Bow formed part of the McClelland Collection which contained 30 lots,
the majority of which were sold.
Overall, 169 pieces were sold by Adams in their Irish Art sale for a hammer total
of ¤2.6m or £1.7m.
Irish sale
ALL eyes will be on Ross's Irish sale on Wednesday evening when 300 lots come
under the hammer at 7.00pm. Major works by William Conor, Frank McKelvey, George
Campbell, Dan O'Neill, Basil Blackshaw, Maurice Wilks and Colin Middleton are
included.
Of particular interest is a painting by Kathleen Bridle RUA, 'Enniskillen Fair'
which was sold for £50 in Ross's almost 50 years ago. It carries a high estimate
of £3,000.
Gallery
BALLYMONEY based McAfee Auctions are selling the furnishing and effects of Ballywindland
House and the residual contents of the Stables Gallery which is re-locating.
Sale takes place on Thursday at 7pm.

Lord Auctions
Atlases After Blaze
Villagers formed a human chain to help save the atlases from the fire
Rare atlases that were nearly destroyed in a fire at a stately home are due
to fetch more than £5m at auction.
Lord and Lady Wardington have been forced to sell the 700 books to pay for
repairs after a fire at Wardington Manor, near Banbury, Oxfordshire.
Villagers formed a human chain to save the books from the smoke-filled home,
passing each one from the library during the fire in April last year.
The first part of the set goes on sale at Sotheby's in London on 18 October.
Lord Wardington collected the 700 books, which contain 60,000 maps, over 50
years.
Sotheby's say the collection is one of the most important ever sold
His collection spans six centuries and experts at Sotheby's say it represents
every major map-maker.
Simon Warren, of Sotheby's, said: "It is the most important collection of atlases
and geographies to have come to auction in living memory."
The collection includes the Doria Atlas, created by the 16th Century Italian
Lafreri school, owned by the Genoese family of Admiral Andrea Doria.
Sotheby's expect the atlas to sell for between £700,000 and £1m.
Also expected to sell for £1m is the first printed atlas, containing maps by
Claudius Ptolemy.
The edition was printed in Bologna in 1477 and is the first to have engraved
maps. It is believed to be one of only two copies in private hands.
Another valuable item, the Joannes van Keulen Zee Atlas, printed in Amsterdam
in 1682, is estimated to sell for £60,000-£80,000.
The second part of the collection is to be sold at Sotheby's in London in March
2006, at a date yet to be set.

Sinn Fein
Auctions 'MI5 Spy Bug'
The device, mounted on a plinth, is accompanied by a framed letter of "authentication."
Sinn Fein is auctioning on the Internet what it says is a bugging device planted
by Britain's secret service in the Northern Irish republican party's offices.
The battery-powered bug, which no longer works, was found in Sinn Fein's offices
in Belfast last September, according to the IRA-linked party's online bookstore.
A letter from Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams about the discovery is also part
of the auction offer, which by 1200 GMT on Wednesday was fetching bids of more
than $2,200.
"In January 2005, Eliza Manningham-Butler, head of MI5, admitted that MI5 bugged
Connolly house," Adams said in the note.
Sinn Fein, which campaigns to oust Britain from Northern Ireland, said it hoped
to use the money raised to help fund "the campaign for Irish unity and freedom."
"This auction is for part of a British MI5 bugging device found hidden in the
floorboards of a Sinn Fein office in Belfast in September 2004," it said in a
statement on Sinnfeinbookshop.com.
"This is a unique opportunity," it added. "A historical item such as this has
never before been made available and it's highly unlikely that it will happen
again."
The device was first put on display by Sinn Fein at its headquarters last September,
just before the party headed for crunch talks with the government and other
Northern Ireland parties in southern England.
"The British make it very hard to make peace when all this is going on," Adams
said at the time.
The bug went on auction on Tuesday as republicans were criticized in the latest
International Monitoring Commission report that said the outlawed IRA was still
recruiting and training.
Side-stepping any accusation it was an attempt to divert attention, Sinn Fein
general secretary Mitchel McLaughlin told the Press Association it was "part
of a serious attempt to shine a light on the ongoing activities of British
security agencies in Ireland."
