'By the way think the site is great and have been to quite a few auctions St Albans, Watford & Bedford. I am making a nice little second income, but certainly not retiring, am going to take a week off work to check out the midweek sales to see if goods are any cheaper at these.

Stepping Back To High Society As Stately Home Auctions Costumes.

A GLAMOROUS Christian Dior evening dress and wedding gowns worn by some of Yorkshire's high society could find themselves in the wardrobe of any lucky woman after they are auctioned next week.

The elegant costumes from the 19th and 20th centuries are part of the costume collection at North Yorkshire stately home Castle Howard, worth an estimated £30,000.

Stylish Norman Hartnell day and evening wear will also be for sale along with evening dresses from the swinging days of jazz, and throwaway paper dresses from the 1960s as well as garments by Mary Quant and Pucci.

Many of the items would have been worn by members of the Howard family while others have been collected over the years for the estate's museum.

Money raised from the sale of parts of the collection will be ploughed back into conservation projects at Castle Howard.

The auction, organised by Tennants Auctioneers, of Leyburn, also includes uniforms, top and bowler hats, footwear and coats, haberdashery and sewing accessories.

Kerry Taylor, costume consultant for Castle Howard, said: "The costume pieces being sold are not rare museum pieces. They are really great pieces for vintage collectors or people wishing to buy to wear.

"It's rather nice to think all these things that were worn in the 1950s and 60s will be given another life and be worn again by women in Yorkshire.

"They are extremely good quality and great fun for people wanting to wear them again. A lot of them would have been worn for special occasions, such as weddings and the races.

"These were posh frocks for Yorkshire ladies and most of them are in very good condition because they were not worn very often and kept at the back of the wardrobe.

"We want them to sell so that money can go back into the estate."

As well as glittering garments, visitors will also be able to bid for dusty items from the estate's cellars and storerooms as well as textiles from other estates, including Womersley Hall in Doncaster.

The two-day sale includes more than 1,000 lots in all with a quarter coming from Castle Howard.

On the first day of the auction, visitors will be able to buy Victorian and 20th century costumes from Castle Howard as well as lace and textiles from Womersley Hall and other estates.

Day two will include items from the attics, cellars and storerooms of Castle Howard and other county houses, including militaria, toys, fishing and sporting equipment, artwork, ceramics, furniture from the Georgian and Victorian days.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the auction centre over the two-day sale, including costume and clothes dealers and collectors from all over the country.

Viewing will take place tomorrow and on Monday from 9am to 4pm at Tennants' auction centre, in Leyburn.

The auction will be held on Tuesday, (June 21) at 10am and Wednesday (22 June) at 10.00am.

Signed Copy of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" Sold in UK.

A signed first edition of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" was sold for 23,800 pounds to a private British buyer on Thursday, auction house Bloomsbury said.

The book was sold at auction as part of a lot comprising a signed photo of Hitler, some of his personal thank-you cards and other stationery from high-ranking Nazis.

The lot also included a photo postcard showing Hitler and then British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain at Bad Godesberg in September 1938 on the eve of the countdown to World War Two.

Hitler penned his autobiography and political manifesto when he was in Landsberg prison in the early 1920s. He had been jailed for five years for his part in a failed 1923 attempt to overthrow the government.

The work -- which translates as "My Struggle" -- became a must-read for German Nazis in the 1930s, especially after Hitler came to power in 1933.

Interest in Hitler and Nazi memorabilia has remained strong 60 years after he committed suicide in the ruins of Berlin.

Auctions In Full Grip of Nelson Celebrations.

• Nelson memorabilia to sell for huge sums on 200th anniversary of Trafalgar
• Letter from Lord Nelson fetches £42,000 in Edinburgh
• Naval hero Nelson famous for alleged "Kiss me, Hardy" quote on his death

"In 1905, on the centenary of the battle, there were also great sales at auction houses. The problem is that the whole area is a minefield littered with fakes" - Martin Downer, former head of jewellery at Sotheby's

Admiral Nelson sent out one of the most famous messages in naval history: "England expects that every man will do his duty."

Two centuries on, it appears the duty of every owner of Nelson memorabilia is to sell and now auction houses are heaving with antique swords, letters and even a lock of the legend's hair.

The 200th anniversary of Nelson's death following his victory over Napoleon's navy is proving a bonanza for collectors who are flooding the market and reaping rich returns.

A letter in which Nelson described his "perfect recovery" from losing his right arm in battle recently sold at Lyon and Turnbull, the Edinburgh auctioneers, for £42,000, ten times the original estimate.

Yesterday, the auctioneers announced the forthcoming sale on 29 June of the campaign table from HMS Vanguard on which the admiral briefed his captains before their victorious Battle of the Nile in 1798. The table, which is being sold by a family in the south of England, can be traced back to General Sir John Savage, who was captain of the Royal Marines at the crucial battle that denied Napoleon his eastern empire.

Phillip Gregory, of Lyon and Turnbull, said: "There is no doubt that this year's 200th anniversary is the ideal time to sell. After the sale of the letter in February we were contacted by people wishing to sell. This year's publicity and the huge interest in Nelson is expected to result in some very good prices."

Robert Lacey, author of Sotheby's, a history of the famous London auction house, added: "There are three huge names from that era who continue to fascinate buyers: Napoleon, Wellington and Nelson. This year is undoubtedly Nelson's big year and that is reflected in the sales."

Next month Bonhams, the London auction house, will hold a massive sale of Nelson memorabilia tied to the anniversary. Among the items for sale are two rare Lloyd's Patriotic Fund Trafalgar Swords, of which only 27 were made as gifts for each of the victorious naval commanders involved in the battle.

One of the swords is being sold by the family of Captain Charles Tyler, who cherished it as a valued heirloom for two centuries. The second sword was presented in 1806 to Lieutenant C Adams of HMS Renommee to mark his gallant conduct while boarding an enemy ship. Each sword is expected to sell for more than £100,000.

The Tyler family are also selling a lock of Nelson's hair, kept inside a gold locket, which was given to their ancestor by Emma Hamilton, the admiral's mistress, for whom he left his wife and scandalised Regency England. The locket is expected to sell for more than £20,000.

Other items include a pair of gold rings reputed to have been exchanged by Nelson and Lady Hamilton and an account of the battle of Trafalgar by a gun-powder boy on board one of Nelson's ships, the Temeraire.

The sale is expected to be one of the highlights of the bicentennial year, which will also see the Queen inspect a gathering of 167 ships at an international fleet review on 28 June.

Jon Baddeley, group head of collector sales at Bonhams, agrees a number of people have decided that now is the time to sell. "Prices will be considerably higher this year than at any other time," he said.

The market of memorabilia connected with Horatio Nelson is as valuable as the admiral's position among the era's "celebrities". An inspired self-publicist, he briefed friends on his exploits at sea in the knowledge that they would leak stories to the press.

His victory over Napoleon's navy in the Battle of the Nile helped turn him into a national hero, as did his numerous wounds. He lost the sight in his right eye after being shot in the face at Calvi in Corsica in 1794, and lost the lower part of his right arm after being shot in Tenerife in 1797.

While his military exploits excited the public, his romance with Lady Hamilton, the wife of the elderly British ambassador to Naples, shocked polite society.

Yet his finest hour came on 21 October, 1805, when in command of 27 ships of the Royal Navy, he attacked and was victorious over 33 opposing ships of the French and Spanish fleets. During the battle, a sniper shot him through his shoulder and lung. He remained conscious for four hours, during which he is alleged to have said: "Kiss me, Hardy" to his flag captain Thomas Hardy. After he died, his body was preserved in a barrel of brandy.

The hoarding of Nelson memorabilia began at his funeral when the sailors of HMS Victory, who carried his coffin for interment in Westminster Abbey, grabbed the British flag off his casket and ripped it to shreds as a memento of their commander.

Martin Downer is former head of jewellery at Sotheby's and author of Nelson's Purse, the story of his own discovery of a rich cache of authentic Nelson artefacts including the admiral's sword and 700 pages of letters which were later sold for £2.5 million in 2002.

He said: "In 1905, on the centenary of the battle, there were also great sales at auction houses. The problem is that the whole area is a minefield littered with fakes.

"The most important thing for collectors is to be sure that the providence can be accurately checked."

Last night, Phillip Gregory, of Lyon & Turnbull, assured prospective buyers of the authenticity of Nelson's campaign table, and added: "We're also selling Napoleon's hankie."

The Positive Club

Things Work Out

Because it rains when we wish it wouldn't, Because men do what they often shouldn't, Because crops fail, and plans go wrong-
Some of us grumble all day long. But somehow, in spite of the care and doubt, It seems at last that things work out.

Because we lose where we hoped to gain, Because we suffer a little pain, Because we must work when we'd like to play-
Some of us whimper along life's way. But somehow, as day always follows the night, Most of our troubles work out all right.

Because we cannot forever smile, Because we must trudge in the dust awhile, Because we think that the way is long-
Some of us whimper that life's all wrong. But somehow we live and our sky grows bright, And everything seems to work out all right.

So bend to your trouble and meet your care, For the clouds must break, and the sky grow fair. Let the rain come down, as it must and will,
But keep on working and hoping still. For in spite of the grumblers who stand about, Somehow, it seems, all things work out.
