News
At the auctions: Family's fitting tribute to fine Armagh
artist
Armagh artist Hampton Ewart, who passed away earlier this
year, was a popular person. He started painting in the 1980s
after discovering a latent talent which he sought to develop
through landscape and portrait work in watercolour.
However, it was when he moved into pen and ink work that
his true artistic talent came to the fore.
With it came a thirst to draw an Armagh of yesteryear as
well as contemporary scenes of the beautiful city and the
surrounding areas of the orchard of Ireland.
In the 1990's Hampton had his own popular column in the
Ulster Gazette, Ewart's Armagh, which also gave him another
enjoyable outlet for his talents.
In his memory Hampton's family has now set up a website,
www.armaghprints.com which is not only dedicated to his pen
and ink work of Armagh City but also Tynan, Keady, Markethill
and other areas throughout the county.
Son Glenn tells me: "We miss dad greatly but we had
discussed with him the idea of launching a website of his
work before he died and he was very excited about it.
"It has been a labour of love for my mother and other
family members and it is our intention to run it as a joint
family project to keep his spirit alive.
"There are over 60 prints on the site but dad drew
hundreds of others so we would urge people who visit to ask
if they don't see their favourite.
"Our hope is it will be a lasting and fitting tribute
to him."
Sotheby's sale
A presentation copy of James Joyce's Ulysses and the Yeats
collection realised fine prices at Sotheby's London sale
of English Literature, History, Children's Books and Illustrations.
Simon Warren, of the top sales house, told me: "The
First Edition presentation copy of Ulysses, which was inscribed
by Joyce to his friend the artist Arthur Power, fetched 36,000
against a high estimate of 25,000.
"The Sydney Cockerell album of autograph letters by
Yeats, including the complete autograph working manuscript
of his essay "The Tragic Theatre", made 72,000
against the lower estimate of 60,000."
Sotheby's had an exceptional Irish sale in May, achieving
a total of over 5m and obtaining 792,000 for a work by
Roderic O'Conor and a world record price of 114,000 for
FE McWilliam's 'Eve'.
At that sale, 54% of the lots on offer made over their high
estimates.
Around the sales
With the holiday season in full swing, Northern Ireland
auction houses are taking a welcome break.
Morgans return to the scene again on July 26; Ross's on
July 28 and Bloomfields on August 2.

HUMPERDINCK AUCTIONS PRIZED MOTORBIKE.
Veteran crooner ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK is auctioning his
prized motorbike on auction website eBay - because he accepts
he's now too old to take to the road on two wheels.
The 67-year-old plans to donate the profits of the sale
to charity and he his hoping an active buyer will save the
high specification Harley Davidson from an idle life in his
garage.
He says, "I don't ride it as much as I used to and
it's such a beautiful bike, it seems a waste for it to stand
around not being used.
"It's got all the extras. I used to ride it up and
down the Pacific Highway in California."
The auction will begin on August 11 (05).

Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne Concert Posters Up
For Auction.
Backstage Auctions has announced the date for their upcoming
Rock Art Poster Auction that will feature over 3,000 original
concert posters, which date back from the 1960s through current
day. Additionally, the auction will feature complete numbered
and first printing series of the "Family Dog" and "Bill
Graham" posters, handbills and card series. The auction
will begin on Sunday, August 14 and will run for two weeks
and end on Sunday, August 28. The full auction catalog will
be available online to view beginning Sunday, August 7 at
www.backstageauctions.com.
When given the opportunity to review the auction catalog,
renowned rock historian Paul Grushkin (author of "The
Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk", "Art
of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion" (co-author with
Dennis King) and "The Treasures of The Hard Rock CafeL" (co-author
with Joel Selvin) commented that "Backstage Auctions
has done the next to impossible task of bringing together
the most coveted rock poster sets along with many of the
holy grails most representative of the psychedelic era." He
goes on to remind us that "The great psychedelic posters
lit up our homes, our workspaces, and our dorm rooms for
decades. Now theyfre among the most collectible posters in
history." Many of the items being offered are rarely
available to collectors or fans. According to Grushkin, "The
few times complete Bill Graham and Family Dog poster sets
have ever been available, they were on and off the market
in a heartbeat."
In addition to the collections being auctioned, there are
hundreds of individual poster lots of musical legends like
AEROSMITH, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, BB KING, THE BEACH BOYS,
THE BEATLES, EAGLES, ELVIS PRESLEY, GRATEFUL DEAD, JEFF BECK,
JIMI HENDRIX, OZZY OSBOURNE, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, RAY CHARLES,
PINK FLOYD, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, THE WHITE STRIPES and THE
YARDBIRDS, YES and ZZ TOP \ just to name a few. According
to Backstage Auctions co-founder Jacques van Gool, "For
the first time, this is truly an auction for every fan or
collector of classic rock memorabilia. There is literally
something for everyone who ever loved rock and roll."
Backstage Auctions is a leading online auction company specializing
in classic rock memorabilia. Founded on the principles of
combining their clients' career achievements and popularity
with the demand and interest of collectors and fans who desire
truly authentic and unique collectibles, Backstage Auctions
is the place where rock legends live on.
