'By the way think the site is great and have been to quite a few auctions St Albans, Watford & Bedford. I am making a nice little second income, but certainly not retiring, am going to take a week off work to check out the midweek sales to see if goods are any cheaper at these.

Auction News

Auctions: Military Treasures Under The Hammer.

Historical items and military memorabilia are much sought after and, indeed often fought over, whenever they appear in auction houses.

So there will be much enthusiasm for Christie's 'Age of Nelson, Wellington and Napoleon sale' in the autumn.

A well-timed event, it will be held at King St, London, on October 19, exactly two days before the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Among many valuble lots are the 'secret' orders for the decisive battle.

Signed by Admiral Lord Nelson and dated October 9, 1805 they were sent to Eliab Harvey, the captain of the legendary ship, The Fighting Temeraire.

The document is estimated to fetch anything from £60,000 to £90,000.

The sale will be led by what is considered the most important medal from British military history ever to come under a gavel.

The gold medal presented to Captain Hardy after the Battle of Trafalgar, it carrries a high estimate of £120,000 and is part of a selection of medals and decorations which have passed by descent to the vendor.

Don't be surprised if the medal is actually sold for a lot more.

Christie's tell me Lord Nelson was a client and acquaintance of James Christie, founder of the famous auction house.

"The catalogue for the sale of Nelson's estate, organised by Emma Hamilton after the hero's death, is still held in our archives," an auction house spokesman said.

Lost Property Goes On Web Auction

UNCLAIMED property handed into police stations is now being sold off in internet auctions, with proceeds going to local charities and organisations.

Bumblebee Auctions went live on Monday following a successful nine-month trialin Welwyn Hatfield.

The scheme was developed by police in Surrey before being picked up by Hertfordshire Constabulary and works in the same way as auction site eBay.

Items such as bicycles, watches, computer games consoles, DVDs and jewellery are all up for sale on the site.

The website replaces the old police system of selling items via public auction houses.

Hertfordshire Constabulary will be auctioning found property that is unclaimed after six weeks and seized property that has been retained for more than six months.

Chief Inspector Mark Crampton said: "The constabulary does a huge search on its computer systems to try and trace owners who have lost property.

"It also carries out detailed examinations of items to look for markings or postcodes in an effort to reunite property with its owners.

"If this proves unsuccessful the force is entitled under the Police Property Act to dispose of these items by sale."

Items from ten police forces around the country are on sale on the site, but searches can be narrowed down to individual forces or even police stations.

Items usually start off at £1 and remain on sale for seven days.

People who want to bid on items must first register with website Nochex so their bank details can be verified.

A large proportion of money raised from auctioning the items will go to charity through the Herts In Trust initiative, benefiting local organisations including Victim Support, the Missing Persons Bureau and alcohol abuse charities.

Chief Inspector Crampton added: "Experience has shown that this is a very practical way of offering the public a chance to pick up a real bargain knowing their money is going to a good local cause."

Freelancer Flogs £1 Tumblers For £21,000.

A freelance illustrator who paid 25p each for four glass tumblers at a car boot sale is rejoicing this weekend, after selling them at auction for a smashing £21,600.

London-based Carole Barrett made the “fantastic find” at a Brighton car boot last month, where a single British pound bought the glass quartet that she told Freelance UK, “just caught my eye.”

Driving home with the purchase, Ms Barrett said she became suspicious she had unearthed something of quality that was also rather rare, a familiar feeling for the 47-year-old freelance.

“I am an addicted ‘car booter’ and a bit of a collector, or should I say ‘hoarder,’ and have in the past found a few good items such as a painting, which was worth £200, and a couple of rare books, but nothing as grand as this.

“Thinking the glasses could be worth something on the way home, my excitement got the better of me and I stalled the car!”

Finally arriving safe and sound at her house in Surrey, Ms Barrett consulted an antiques book to find out more about the tumblers that under closer inspection, revealed Masonic symbols and the initials ‘PT.’

She contacted Christie’s, the London auction house, who told her over e-mail that the descriptions given indicated the four glasses could be worth as much as £20,000.

Inspired by the news, Ms Barrett dispatched the quartet to the auctioneers where they were identified as rare antiques dating back to 1768.

According to the experts, the tumblers originate from the works of William and Mary Beilby, the Newcastle couple famed in the 18th century for their enamel decoration on clear glass.

Paul Tippett, Christie's authority on glass, described Ms Barrett's bargain as a collector's dream, adding that: “anything identified with the Beilby family is absolutely magical for glass collectors.”

Yesterday, Ms Barrett told Freelance UK she had just received her dues from Christie’s and was intending to celebrate in style, after the £1 glasses went under the hammer for over £21,000.

“The buyer, a private collector paid £21,600,” she said. My cheque arrived last week for £15,000 – after of course Christies claimed their commission - don’t they do well out of it!”

Before striking it rich thanks to the Beilby family, Ms Barrett has won a string of competitions, prize draws and radio phone-ins. But the freelance is modest, it’s not skill, she says - rather just a stroke of luck.

“Over the years, I have won 7 short breaks including a trip to New York and holidays to Hollywood and Turkey.

“I do consider myself ‘lucky’ as most of the prizes have been won by chance rather than skill and with radio competitions; it's very often just a case of getting through.”

She adds film premier tickets, tickets to shows, CD's, 365 cans of Guinness, “and of course my lovely little blue car” to her treasury trove of ‘won’ goodies.

Such ‘part time’ winnings have been enjoyed while the freelance continues to work ‘full-time’ as an artist, retaining a “good clientele” with commissions for greetings cards, travel, natural history and other instructional guides.

And there are also signs Barrett is onto the trend of the off-on entrepreneurs – as she too admits to cashing in on the wonders of the World Wide Web.

“Having purchased my first computer last year as an aid to work - as I couldn't win one,” she joked, “I then discovered ebay and Amazon which has become a great outlet for unwanted items and surplus books, which in turn brings in a little extra income between jobs.

“eBay being another 'game of chance' and quite exciting as you never know what people are prepared to bid.”
