Auction News
Beatles sale could set new records
BEATLE-MANIA is set to take over Ramsey Auction Rooms on
Saturday as various pieces of authentic Beatle memorabilia
go under, as it were, Maxwell's Silver Hammer.
The collection of goods from Liverpool's Fab Four will Come
Together with the usual items up for auction which includes
garden furniture, china, jewellery, electrical goods, tools
and bicycles.
Antony Pryor who has been involved in the running of Ramsey
Auctions for 18 months, is thrilled with the rare find. He
said: "To have such an exclusive lot up for auction
is amazing and very exciting for us.
"The collection is extensive but even more important
is the bill of authenticity we have obtained, which proves
that the articles are genuine. We were provided with a bill
of sale proof from Christie's auction house in London and
a mark of authenticity from Frank Caiazzo, who is the number
one authority on the Beatles handwriting.
"His original email is probably worth as much as some
of the goods."
The estimated value of the lot ranges from £5 to £2,750
with the most expensive item being a framed picture from
Strato UK of the four band members, Paul McCartney, John
Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, complete with their
signatures.
Other exclusive items include a proof of an album cover
for The Butcher which was banned because the pictures were
too graphic, a framed box set of the album and film A Hard
Day's Night and the gold disc given to Paul McCartney when
his song All the Best sold its 500,000th copy.
Visitors can also bid for smaller collectables, such as
framed CDs and a miniature Yellow Submarine tea-set, with
the teapot shaped as a yellow submarine.
They can expect to be in good hands as the auction gets
underway. David Palmer, auctioneer at Ramsey Auction Rooms,
is a familiar face on television programmes, including the
BBC antiques series Flog It! and will be governing proceedings
at the auction on Saturday, August 13. Visitors will find
their money Can't Buy Me Love but some precious items may
go From Me to You.
INFORMATION: Ramsey Auction Rooms hold a live auction every
second and last Saturday in the month. The rooms are at Units
9 and 10, Northern Mill, Field Road in Ramsey. They are open
from 10am-3pm and anyone interested in viewing the goods
before the day can do so on-line at www.auctions.freeserve.co.uk.
When the gavel comes down, London rules the art world
August 11th, 2005
London overtook New York to become the world's biggest art
auction centre in the first half of the year, with $854-million
(U.S.) of sales, reported Artprice.com, a French data service.
London racked up a 38.2-per-cent share of the $2.23-billion
of fine art sold by Sotheby's Holdings Inc., Christie's International
and other houses between Jan. 1 and July 18, Artprice said
in an e-mailed report. New York sales in the period totalled
$833-million or 37.3 per cent of the total, which rose 10.2
per cent from a year earlier, it said.
"This increase is essentially due to the spectacular
ascent of the U.K. market, which has over the years become
the most dynamic epicentre of the global art market," said
Artprice, whose headquarters are in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or,
France.
One or two big pictures can put a city ahead in the auction
stakes. London last topped New York in 2002, when Canadian
newspaper magnate Ken Thomson paid £49.5-million pounds
($107.3-million Canadian at current exchange rates) for Rubens's
Massacre of the Innocents, according to Artprice.
For 2004, New York had a 46-per-cent share of global auction
sales and London had 27 per cent, according to Artprice.
The U.S. city's total was swelled last year by a Picasso
painting that raised more than $100-million (U.S.).
New York has the biggest sales of impressionist, modern
and contemporary art. London is the No. 1 market for Old
Master paintings -- its last sales were in early July, showing
up in Artprice data -- and has a diversity of sales from
Islamic to British, Irish and Asian art that pushed it ahead
in the first half.
Even after the terrorist attacks last month, a Canaletto
painting of Venice sold for £18.6-million at a London
auction, breaking a record for the 18th-century Italian artist.
France's market share was 5.7 per cent and Italy's was 3.4
per cent, Artprice said.
BidNation.co.uk to Provide Reverse Auction Platform
August 10th, 2005
BidNation ( http://www.bidnation.co.uk ), the thriving 'reverse
auction' website where the lowest unique bidder wins the
goods, has secured a deal to provide its bespoke platform
to Archant ( http://www.archant.co.uk ), the UK’s
fourth largest independent newspaper group. The resulting
site, launching under the banner of bid24, will go live
to 1.5m readers in the London area during August.
Since its introduction in January 2005, BidNation.co.uk
has attracted over 14,000 members who bid for a variety of
luxury products such as iPods, foreign holidays and plasma
TVs. Users can bid on many items for just £1 a time
plus a small administration fee, and can win high-value goods
for literally pennies. The idea is to place the lowest unique
bid, which can be between 1p and the maximum bid amount for
a particular auction.
Archant approached BidNation to supply its reverse auction
platform for bid24 to assist in expanding and developing
interactive media platforms throughout the group. If the
system proves successful in London, Archant will roll it
out nationally through its newspaper, magazine and website
titles.
Clive Haden, director of digital media at Archant Group,
comments: "We view our relationship with BidNation for
the provision of the bid24 reverse auction platform as an
important step in our strategy to capture future new media
revenues from the online auction sector."
Justin Chamberlain, marketing director at BidNation, comments: "The
growth of BidNation in terms of our user base and commercial
applications has taken us by surprise over the past six months.
The contract with Archant is just the tip of the iceberg
as we are about to sign another three separate commercial
deals which will ensure BidNation reaches a UK TV audience,
while re-branded licensed platforms will also be launching
globally."
BidNation is based in Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire, and
launched December 2004 to provide an online reverse auction
platform at http://www.bidnation.co.uk. The company has eight
employees.
Auctioneers expect £1m for Henry
Moore Sculpture
August 9th, 2005
A tiny marble sculpture by Henry Moore - bought for 18 guineas
soon after it was carved in 1931 - should fetch more than £1
million at auction.
The eight and three quarter-inch high figure, entitled Mother
and Child, was described by the sculptor as "one of
my best earlier pieces".
Moore drew inspiration for the piece, carved in the finest
marble, verde di prato, from a visit to Florence in 1925,
when he visited the Brancacci Chapel each morning to admire
the figures of the Italian painter Tommaso Masaccio.
Matthew Bradbury, of Bonhams, which offers the work for
sale in London on 29 November, said yesterday: "Very
few pre-Second World War works by Moore come to auction.
It is an image of true harmony - aesthetically satisfying
and appealing."
Military memorabilia under the hammer
Historical items and military memorabilia are much sought
after and, indeed often fought over, whenever they appear
in auction houses.
So there will be much enthusiasm for Christie's 'Age of
Nelson, Wellington and Napoleon sale' in the autumn.
A well-timed event, it will be held at King St, London,
on October 19, exactly two days before the 200th anniversary
of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Among many valuble lots are the 'secret' orders for the
decisive battle.
Signed by Admiral Lord Nelson and dated October 9, 1805
they were sent to Eliab Harvey, the captain of the legendary
ship, The Fighting Temeraire.
The document is estimated to fetch anything from £60,000
to £90,000.
The sale will be led by what is considered the most important
medal from British military history ever to come under a
gavel.
The gold medal presented to Captain Hardy after the Battle
of Trafalgar, it carrries a high estimate of £120,000
and is part of a selection of medals and decorations which
have passed by descent to the vendor.
Don't be surprised if the medal is actually sold for a lot
more.
Christie's tell me Lord Nelson was a client and acquaintance
of James Christie, founder of the famous auction house.
"The catalogue for the sale of Nelson's estate, organised
by Emma Hamilton after the hero's death, is still held in
our archives," an auction house spokesman said.
Football Fans lost £40,000 in
eBayfraud
An internet conman fleeced sports fans of thousands of pounds
before being caught with the help of the Manchester United
manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a court heard yesterday.
Robert Housden used the auction site eBay to sell bogus
memorabilia that included a pair of boots supposedly signed
by David Beckham, the England captain.
Customers bombarded Housden, 19, with bids believing them
to be genuine autographed shirts from teams including England
and Brazil. In reality they were poor-quality replicas he
had signed himself with a marker pen.
Housden, who was desperate to pay off loans and gambling
debts, pocketed up to £40,000 through the fraud. He
was caught after trading standards officers met Sir Alex
and his players to obtain a genuine shirt with real signatures,
and then checked them against the fakes.
Leicester Crown Court was told how Housden set up a genuine
on-line sports memorabilia business after leaving school
at 16 with 10 GCSEs.
But he soon found himself struggling to pay back the man
who had loaned him the start-up funds.
An experienced collector, who paid £200 for a "signed" Manchester
United shirt, recognised the signatures as fake.
Housden, from Shepshed, Leics, admitted 14 charges of obtaining
cash transfers by deception, and one of obtaining a cheque
by deception. He asked for 57 similar offences to be considered.
The case was adjourned until next month.

The Positive Club
"There are those of us who are always about to live.
We are waiting until things change, until there is more time,
until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until
we settle down -- until, until, until. It always seems as
if there is some major event that must occur in our lives
before we begin living."
-- George Sheehan
"People waste most of their waking hours every day
going through the motions, chatting idly, shuffling paper,
putting off decisions, reacting, majoring in minors and concentrating
on trivia. They spend their time in low priority tension
relieving, rather than high priority goal-achieving activities."
-- Denis Waitley
"No man can always be right. So the struggle is to
do one's best, to keep the brain and conscience clear, never
be swayed by unworthy motives or inconsequential reasons,
but to strive to unearth the basic factors involved, then
do one's duty."
