eBay can make UK households £3,000 richer per year
And boost the economy too

Households which use internet auctions to get rid of their unwanted items can make up to £3,000 per year, according to new research, and this activity could be a major boon to the UK economy.
The Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR) consultancy has predicted that more than one per cent of the UK's high street retail sales - that's some £4bn - will be spent through online internet sites such as eBay this year.

The government doesn't currently include the trading figures for eBay et al in its retail trade figures, meaning the boost to the UK economy coming from online auctions is going unrecorded and the UK high street could be growing faster than Whitehall's statisticians believe.

£25k+ Tag on T S Eliot Collection.

AN extraordinary and tender series of letters written by poet and author T S Eliot to his godson, Tom Faber, will be sold by the Faber publishing family in the autumn.

Bonhams will auction the private and largely unpublished correspondence with inscribed first editions of the poet's work in London at their New Bond St sales room on September 20.

Thomas Erle Faber (1927-2004) was T S Eliot's first godchild and the son of his friend and publisher Geoffrey Faber.

He enjoyed a distinguished career as a physicist, first at Trinity College, Cambridge, and then for 50 years at Corpus Christi College.

He was also chairman of the Geoffrey Faber Holding Company and the only representative of the Faber family on the board of Faber and Faber.

Bonhams' manuscripts consultant, Felix Pryor says: "This is an utterly wonderful collection from possibly the greatest poet of the 20th century; both very moving but enormous fun."

The illustrated letters and poems reveal Eliot at his most genial and humorous.

The series of nearly 50 letters to Tom Faber will be sold together and are expected to fetch £25,000-£30,000.

The Faber Collection also includes a silver hunting case pocket watch given to the 12-year-old T S Eliot for Christmas 1900 and passed on by him to his 13-year-old godson, Tom. It is estimated at £2,000-£3,000.

A presentation first edition of The Waste Land, inscribed by Eliot, is expected to sell for £30,000-£40,000.

A carved two-door wardrobe went at £280 while a carved four fold screen made £200.

Last surviving tramcar for auction

THE last surviving tramcar used in Carlisle until 1931 has finally seen the light of day after languishing in an outbuilding close to the city centre.

The tram was one of eight built in 1912 by the United Electric Car Company of Preston and was used until the tramway system in the city was scrapped on November 11, 1931.

It is now to be sold at auction after it was unearthed from the outbuilding and although it is likely to cost someone a small fortune to renovate, is expected to fetch between £1,000 and £3,000.

Auctioneers, H&H King Cumbria Auction Rooms, were astonished when they made the discovery and have spent hours researching the tram’s history.

Many of the trams that were used for Carlisle’s system were broken-up after the transport service ceased operating and their bodies were either sold for use as hen-houses or farm store-buildings.

Two of the trams were used to provide a structure for a farm building in Rosley, near Wigton, which was then converted into a bungalow and incorporated into the home.

In 1971 the owners, Bob and Kitty Charters decided to modernise their bungalow and had to replace the wooden and metal trams with bricks and mortar.

One tram had to be completely dismantled and was sent to be used as spares for another one that was being restored by the Tramway Museum at Crich in Derbyshire.

The other tram, believed to be the one now up for sale, came out almost complete and has been stored in various outbuildings ever since.

Auctioneers are sure that the tram’s history will attract national attention from private collectors and museums when it comes up for auction next Sunday during the Classic Car Weekend to be held at Dalemain near Ullswater.

Auctioneer Howard Naylor, said: “This tram has a remarkable history and our research has indicated that it is the last surviving Carlisle city tramcar.

Volin Stolen From Violinist Alan Brind Turns Up at Auction House

A 260-year-old violin stolen a year ago from violinist Alan Brind has been recovered, the U.K.'s UTV reports.

The violin, built by Edward Lewis in approximately 1760, was stolen from Brind's car in June 2004. Recently, a dealer brought it to Bonhams auction house, where it caught the eye of Philip Scott, the auction house's head of musical instruments.

"This was a much finer instrument that those usually offered by this dealer, so we decided to do some more research," Scott said. An insurance company database listed the instrument as stolen.

"After a few months without it I had resigned myself absolutely to never seeing it again, so I really am delighted that this process has brought it back to me," Brind said.

Brind won the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest in 1986. He left conservatory at one point to become a snooker player, but later returned to music and currently freelances with London orchestras.
