Bids spiral for debt man's entire belongings
LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - A man auctioning off everything
he owns as one job lot to clear his spiralling credit card
debts has sparked a bidding frenzy.
Bidding for Steven Hartwright's entire belongings, which
began at just £1 on internet auction site eBay, has
now soared to more than £22,000.
And Mr Hartwright's lot is currently the most searched auction
on the whole eBay site.
And Mr Hartwright, 23, has promised the buyer their pick
of his possessions, which run into thousands of items.
Should the highest bidder wish, web designer Mr Hartwright
says he will let them take away all his worldly goods in
a removal van.
His only request is that he be allowed to keep the clothes
he is standing in.
Mr Hartwright said: "It’s going to be bad enough
having nothing left. I don’t want to be walking around
naked too."
The amazing auction is a first even for eBay, which has
seen all manner of weird and wacky sales over the years.
Mr Hartwright, who lives with his parents in Ilkeston near
Derby, said he was taking the drastic step because interest
repayments on credit card debts were crippling him.
Up for grabs are his prized 42 inch widescreen plasma TV,
home cinema system, digital cameras and camcorder, DVD player
and two computers.
He also stands to lose his tropical aquarium and fish, furniture
including his bed, his entire music, DVD and book collections
and his clothes save the one remaining outfit.
Mr Hartwright said: "There is no catch. If the buyer
wants it all, it will all go – right down to my toothbrush.
"We are talking about a lifetime’s possessions.
They run into the thousands. When I try and list them all
it sounds like something from the Generation Game on TV – and
there are cuddly toys thrown in too."
Mr Hartwright said: "I have debts of £7,500,
so I am hoping to clear those and then make enough on top
to be able to start all over again.
"My spending - mainly on electronic goods - got out
of control and now the interest repayments are too steep.
I am determined to be much more careful with my spending
in future.
"But it promises to be quite a liberating experience,
losing everything I own and making a totally fresh start."
He said that losing his plasma TV would be the biggest blow. "I
only bought it last month and I spent over £1,500 on
it and accessories," he said.
He added: "I would have to be sure the fish were going
to be looked after too. If the buyer doesn’t want them,
they could go in my mother’s aquarium."
Mr Hartwright said he was most looking forward to losing
his drum kit, adding: "I’ve had complaints about
the noise from neighbours, who say I don’t play properly
and the whole street can hear. Getting rid of it will save
me a lot of grief."
He said his girlfriend and parents have no idea about the
coming clear-out. He said: "They are always telling
me I have too much stuff but they will be speechless when
they hear about this.
"I don’t suppose they ever imagined I would get
rid of everything."
Mr Hartwright said he decided to sell everything as a single
job lot because it would have been too hard to hold separate
auctions.
He said: "Can you imagine all the different deliveries?" I
would have found it too hard emotionally listing everything
one by one.
"It would have been too tempting to leave things I
liked out and that would have defeated the whole point."
The auction ends at noon on Friday
eBid's lifetime offer to keep giant at bay
When it comes to online auctions eBay dominates the scene.
In a bid to escape the shadow of its more dominant competitor
eBid.co.uk, which declares itself the second largest player
in the UK market, has announced a one-off special offer.
eBid Gold Memberships - which provide free listing and closing
fees for life - will be offered for the price it costs to
list one item on eBay. But that is for today only. Worth
around £45, the membership will be offered for 75p
(and not the £3 as originally stated).
Cheekily, eBid.co.uk has chosen Thursday 29 September as
today marks an increase in eBay charges. Insertion charges
for Multiple Items and Fixed Price Listings from are increasing £2
to £3. Also, the cost of adding a Buy It Now option
will now be charged according to an item's value (costing
anything from 5p-25p), instead
'We remain committed to giving an excellent customer service
and good value for money at all times,' said eBid's co-founder
and CEO, Gary Sewell, 'And with the security of the eBid
site guaranteed, our members can be rest-assured that they
will be getting a high-quality service without fear of fraud,
as well as all the help and support they need to make a successful
online sale or purchase.'
For more details of the offer, visit www.eBid.co.uk. You
have to click on the register button to open your account,
and when offered the chance to upgrade your account, choose
the Lifetime Gold option which will be priced at £0.15
for the day, instead of the normal £44.99.
Features of eBid.co.uk include a Buddy point programme,
where members can earn buddy points to win high-value items
and a 'Wanted' system, where buyers list the item they want
to buy at a price they want to pay and 'sales' bidding takes
place with the lowest bid securing the sale. This, claims
eBid turns the standard process of buying and selling on
its head, providing a 'more heightened interactive experience'.

Autorola Car Auction Site In Driving Seat
Private sellers have begun to sell their cars on the new
online car auction Autorola. The days when the ordinary consumer
had to accept their prices offered by the local car dealer
are over. With the new car auction Autorola, private car
sellers can raise their selling price by offering their cars
to the whole UK market - and with a few clicks of the mouse.
Autorola has come to the UK after four years of success in
continental Europe.
The site has been operating less than a year and a half
in Denmark, where Autorola originates. Since then the company
has established new auctions in Germany, Austria, Holland
and Sweden. Now the time has come for the UK market and the
people behind the auction say they have a clear strategy.
'We are going to make money for our customers by helping
them to better prices. We know how to help the private seller
to find exactly right buyer who is willing to pay the best
market price for the car, which is one of the reasons that
we have been successful in our other markets,' says the UK
manager Lena Kamstrup Kjær.
The person putting the car up for sale sets a reserve price,
and the guide description form makes it easy to describe
the car in detail. 'It is crucial that cars are accurately
described, and we have really put in an effort to make the
description form easy to use for our users. A better description
helps to achieve a better price,' explains Lena Kamstup Kjær.
Autorola has a manned customer centre to handle any questions
that might occur. The launch of the UK auction brings the
total number of employees for all of the Autorola auctions
up to 44. The managing director, Peter Grøftehauge,
who funded the auctions together with his brother, Martin
Grøftehauge, expects that the total number of employees
will be close to 60 this time next year.
Autorola makes it possible to find the specific car dealer
who has a customer for the car being put up for sale and
therefore can pay a better price and still make money. 'We
have only achieved the market position that we have in continental
Europe because we have created a system that benefits both
buyer and seller. A targeted purchase of cars at Autorola
makes it possible for the dealers to go even closer to their
own selling prices and still make more money for their dealerships,'
says Lena Kamstrup Kjær.
It costs £100 to £225 (inc. VAT) to sell a car
on the auction, but other then that the Web site is completely
free to use and a fee is only charged in the case of a successful
transaction. It is only car dealers who are allowed to buy
on the auction, while both companies and private people can
put their cars up for sale.
Sheikhs' Coolmore boycott begins to bite
A colourful assortment of horsemen, titled gents, rogues
and bloodstock agents descended on the village of Kill, outside
Dublin, yesterday, all with one multimillion-pound question
on their collective minds.
Following the exclusive disclosure in The Daily Telegraph
last week that the powerful Maktoum family from Dubai were
stopping buying yearlings sired by stallions from John Magnier's
powerful Coolmore stud, would Sheikh Mohammed and his brothers
continue to boycott the Irish breeding empire at Goffs' grandly
named Million Sale?
By last night, they had their answer and it will send ripples
through the billion-pound bloodstock industry around the
globe. The Maktoums pointedly refused to have anything to
do with Coolmore-sired offspring, which make up more than
a third of the sales catalogue - and the ban could continue
for 10 years.
Over the next few days, racehorse owners with dreams to
match the size of their bank balances will pay sums of money
that dwarf most people's annual salary for a yearling which
might overcome lottery-type odds to win a Guineas or a Derby
in 2007.
The sale is the first of Europe's premier auctions where
oil-rich sheikhs, foreign princes and wealthy tycoons traditionally
lock horns in search of another Shergar or Dancing Brave
- and it has a fine tradition.
The story is still told of one Irish breeder who enjoyed
a particularly successful Goffs sale, thanks in large part
to Hamdan Al Maktoum, the older brother of Sheikh Mohammed,
splashing out the proverbial king's ransom for his yearling.
Such was the joy of the grateful Irishman he went up to Dubai's
finance minister and pressed some 'luck money' into his hand.
Imagine a rabbit golfer offering Tiger Woods a putting tip,
or John McCririck lecturing Trappist monks on the pleasures
of silence, and you start to appreciate the look of astonishment
on the sheikh's face.
However, as the bloodstock cognoscenti cast their eye over
the 600 or so 'lots' up for sale, the talk yesterday was
only about one subject: the reported ban.
Would the Maktoums really cold-shoulder yearlings sired
by Coolmore's outstanding sires or would they relent and
swoop for a couple of mega-expensive yearlings by Sadler's
Wells or Montjeu, sire of this year's Derby winner Motivator?
The ban, introduced at the Keeneland September yearling
sales earlier this month, has stunned the racing world.
"Is there REALLY a ban? How long will it last? They
can't mean it," has been the general reaction, fuelled
in no small part by a headline in the Racing Post, the sport's
trade paper, which deserves a place alongside 'Small earthquake
in Chile: not many dead.' It read: 'No boycott but Sheikh
to shun Coolmore sires in policy shift.' Er, yes . . .
As Kill woke up yesterday morning underneath leaden skies,
the common view among the more cerebral horsemen was that
at least one of the sheikhs would dip a hand in his pocket
and buy a Coolmore yearling, just to take the steam out of
the affair.
That view was enhanced by mid-morning when Sheikh Mohammed,
making his first appearance at the sale for years, arrived
by helicopter, along with Hamdan and their advisers. Attention
quickly switched to the early lots sired by Coolmore stallions.
However, as the afternoon progressed and the sheikhs refused
to make a bid for Coolmore-sired stock - while splashing
out on yearlings by their own stallions - the realisation
slowly began to dawn on the unconvinced that this boycott
is for real and not just a passing protest.
Newmarket's prestige sales are the next staging post where
the ban will continue: a ban which extends to friends of
the Maktoums, with specific orders going to bloodstock agents
and trainers who buy on their behalf.
The simple truth is that the dodgy world of bloodstock is
witnessing the start of a revolution which could last for
five to 10 years and, no matter who are the eventual winners
and losers, it had better come to terms with that fact.
The reasons given for the Maktoum boycott have, to date,
been twofold. After investing zillions in Coolmore down the
years (including £6 million up front in cash for a
basket of nominations from Sadler's Wells, Caerleon and Fairy
King a decade or so ago), there has been next to no reciprocation
from Magnier and his cohorts in the sheikhs' Darley Stud
bluebloods.
And secondly, the failure of Magnier and trainer Aidan O'Brien
to attend the Dubai World Cup in the spring, when they had
a runner, caused considerable offence.
But beneath the surface, there are much stronger and more
dangerous currents at work which have forced the Maktoums'
collective arm. In essence, they centre on the way the bloodstock
industry works, with its glaring lack of scruples and regulation.
Add the enormous power and influence of Magnier and his Coolmore
partners, and the awe in which they are held on both sides
of the Irish Sea, and you get closer to the real reasons
for this spectacular bust-up.
Sheikh Mohammed personally has a great affection for the
Irish. Like him, they are horsemen. And he respects Coolmore's
operation, but enough is enough.
The boycott is not an overnight whim. The Maktoums have
been discussing this for two years. It is tempting to say
the Skeikhs are here for the Kill. The victim may take longer
to identify.

Why Feedback Is So Important On eBay And How To Get It
Have you ever wondered what the term "feedback" meant
when visiting eBay, and why it's so important?
The answer is quite simple. When it comes to buying and
selling on eBay, people look at different things before deciding
to make their purchase. One of those things is feedback.
Does the seller have a high feedback rating; are the comments
positive, mostly positive, or negative? You see, feedback,
similar to a credit rating, is a quick way to help determine
previous buyer's experiences, and provides an insight to
the seller's reputation.
While most buyers and sellers acknowledge the importance
of leaving feedback describing their experience on eBay,
there are still some who choose to ignore it.
In most cases, after a sale the seller will leave feedback
regarding the timeliness of the transaction, receipt of payment,
and ease of communication.
The buyer may choose to withhold feedback until they receive
their merchandise, to describe the condition received, timeliness
of shipping, and whether or not the item purchased on eBay
was received as described.
But in several cases, the buyer doesn't always follow up
on that, which causes the seller to miss out on a very valuable
selling tool. If you've ever experienced this for yourself,
then you know how frustrating it can be.
A lot goes into listing, packaging, and shipping an item.
It seems only fair those actions should be rewarded with
a feedback acknowledgment to inform the seller how they did
with that transaction.
Of course, there are other ways to determine when feedback
should be left, so that both parties benefit and no one is
short changed.
One of those methods is to leave feedback immediately after
completing your transaction, even if to opt for the selection "will
leave feedback later".
At least this way you've notified the buyer and/or seller
that you've acknowledged the transaction and will follow
it up after the sale.
Another alternative is to send a gentle reminder to the
buyer notifying them that you have left feedback regarding
their part of the transaction and request that they do the
same upon receipt of their order. This method is generally
well accepted and typically yields the desired results.
Let's face it, with today's busy schedules not everyone
remembers these details until the next time they decide to
buy or sell on eBay. Since feedback is how many buyers and
sellers are evaluated for their ability to pay or ship items,
it is equally important to provide it after your eBay transaction.
So, what does this feedback tell us? Simply stated, it describes
each individual's transaction and experience on eBay. It
tells us how well communications went between the parties
involved. It provides information regarding payment, condition
of item received and timeliness of shipping the item.
Without feedback you may be excluded from bidding on certain
auctions, or required to contact the seller prior to making
a bid on their item.
If you have negative feedback, you may be excluded from
bidding on items at all. Negative feedback on eBay is not
a good thing and is definitely something that should be worked
out if at all possible; otherwise it may take awhile to rebuild
your eBay reputation.
Most buyers generally feel more comfortable and confident
in their eBay purchase if the person they are dealing with
has a higher positive feedback rating.
