The Positive Club

“Make hay while the sun shines!”

When you ask experienced direct marketeers about the key factors in selecting a list of people for mailing a direct marketing piece – they’ll certainly respond with – ‘they’ve bought recently’.

Now when I first heard this – I was somewhat confused.

“ You mean that the more recently someone has bought a product – the more likely they are to make another buying decision?”

YES!

It almost seems counter-intuitive doesn’t it? And yet according to those who know about such things – it’s absolutely true.

That’s why many direct marketing companies will mail their ‘hot list’ every week – yes – every week.

You and I know that in our own buying moments we’re more likely to buy additional items at the point of sale than after the sale.

How often have you bought an accessory to match that new purchase? A tie to go with the suit and shirt! A handbag to go with the shoes! A stereo to fit in the new car! I know I have.

And it’s when, in our commercial lives, that we realise, truly realise this fact – that we can make additional sales that are good for us – and more importantly - good for the customer too.

So when the customer is buying, when the colleague/friend/family member is truly listening, when the sun is shining, – that’s the time to add additional products, that’s the time to ask for what we want, that’s the time to make hay!
