The Storm Report

Ten tips to stretch your small business budget

You are starting your own, home-based or small business. Many such businesses don’t succeed because their owners lack the necessary financial discipline. Indeed, it is those small businesses that focus on ‘spend less, earn more’ that tend to succeed. So, in practical terms, what can you do to stretch your small business’s budget? The most important thing is to avoid all expenses that don’t directly or indirectly contribute to revenue. Here are ten examples that apply equally to any business:

1. Work with the 80/20 rule
Remember the 80/20 rule of thumb that says that 80% of your costs are incurred in 20% of your purchases. Analyse your spending habits and isolate the purchases that make up 80% of your costs. Make a commitment to reduce costs on one to three of those purchases every month. It will require proper bookkeeping and strong discipline. But it should pay off.

2. Always get a deal
Get into the habit of looking out for and taking advantage of deals. You will find them everywhere, from your local office-supply shop to the Internet. Bear in mind that every pound you save is a pound of profit that goes straight into your pocket.

3. Team up with others
One of the most cost-effective ways to buy your supplies is through cooperative purchasing, where you team up with other small businesses (even your competitors) and buy together to take advantage of bulk discounts. In the process, you could make some good contacts, too.

4. Save on technology
Investing in new technology is a great temptation to resist. Do you really need to upgrade your computer? Do you even need to upgrade your software? The longer you can hold out with existing technology, the cheaper the new technology you are looking for is likely to cost.

5. Buy used and/or refurbished items
Rarely does a small-business owner have to buy brand-new stuff when purchasing furniture, fixtures, computers, copiers and other items. There are great deals for used and restored items all over the place. Ask yourself will a new computer or new fax machine bring in more sales than an old one? Unlikely.

6. Work on insurance and warranties
Remember to shop around when you are buying insurance and also when you are buying warranties on equipment.

7. Forget monthly payment
Be very careful when you get into any sort of monthly payment, whether it is for equipment, a motor vehicle or anything else. If such a payment is interest-free, the cost of lending you the money must be included in the price of the goods. If they are charging you interest, make sure that it is absolutely the lowest rate going and that whatever you are buying is also competitively priced.

8. Save on communications
It is a normal tendency to order a business telephone line, and at times a second line for fax, the day your home business or small business is incorporated. Stop and ask yourself what you really need. Could your mobile phone be cheaper than a land line? If you really do need a land line, consider this: business telephone rates are usually higher than what you pay for your personal calls.

9. Spend on professional help and save
Whenever appropriate, seek professional help, especially in the areas of law and accounting. A good accountant will show you several ways to make the tax legislation work for you. Work with them and you could save a fortune.

10. Save on marketing
It is very easy to blow money on advertising, marketing and public relations.

Real TV Has Arrived Online

As I get on in life, the saying "The more things change, the
more they stay the same" holds more truth than I realize (or
care to admit).

Because so much technology makes the Web work, it' easy to
forget sometimes that human beings are behind all the
nameless, faceless technology we take for granted.
But, in the end, people drive the Internet, and people's
behavior and psychology mean that history will repeat itself
online the same way it repeats itself offline.
And, if there is one undeniable fact about history, people,
and communication, it's this: People Love TV!

Let's face it.

Ever since the "idiot box," "boob tube," or whatever you
want to call it showed up in the world, TV now represents a
mainstay of entertainment, news, and education in most
people's lives.

The bottom line reason: TV engages more of the senses than
the written word and it allows you to see and hear things
happen.

This heightened sensory involvement evokes emotion (gets you
to react) and causes you to want more of the same.
Well, a funny thing happened this year that I believe will
change the Internet forever.

Macromedia came out with Flash Player 7, which allows
streaming of full motion video files, even over dial-up
Internet connections.

What makes this newest version of the Flash technology so
important is that it works on ALL computers and does not
require special servers to deliver content.

Now at this point, the size of the actual video on your
computer screen will remind anyone over sixty of the
original 3-inch TV screens a came in a huge walnut cabinet.
But, that will change quickly enough.

Technology always catches up with what people want, and
people want TV-style communication on the Web.
Not Oprah or the evening news, but rather the same
experience as TV where they see and hear information on
subjects that interest them.

Imagine the Web taking local cable access one step further
by allowing individuals to broadcast not only on the "local
channel," but provide TV on-demand on every "local channel"
around the world!

Now understand that this isn't pie in the sky or "next year"
technology.

It's here and now and I've used it myself!

It's a little clunky on the production end, but that will
clear up soon enough. You can check out my video at
http://www.igottatellyou.com/issue25/

Just like the 3-inch screens of the 1940's gave way to the
52-inch screen plasmas of the late 1990's, true streaming
video has finally arrived and the screen sizes will get
bigger as compression technology improves.

And this time, it won't take 50 years to get there.
I expect to see full-screen, or near full-screen video on
the Web over dial-up connections within the next 2 years.
But until then, the technology has reached a point where it
represents a viable option for people with a message to
share that needs more power than traditional text and static
picture format.

It's a bit more expensive to produce than people expect, and
the picture for dial-up users is a tad small, but it's a
start... and that's all most people need.

The future of the Web for the next 5-10 years just arrived.

The positive Club

“Stop the flow – upstream!”

Have you ever stopped to count how many bits of paperwork cross your desk during a normal week?

It’s certainly a worthwhile exercise and the number may surprise you.

How many of that number actually need YOUR attention?

Could some of them be handled by one of your colleagues, or an assistant or secretary?

Should some of them never reach you at all?

Can you block the flow of paperwork – upstream?

This ‘problem’ was recently brought home to me when a new ‘Spam filter’ was installed in our computer system and suddenly I was without – up to 100 – emails a day that had previously taken my attention and time - even if it was only to press the delete button 100 times a day!

Is there paperwork that could be handled automatically and wouldn’t need your personal attention – every time it lands?

Is there some of it that could be blocked entirely?

The amount of time we can save by giving this matter some thought and action can be surprising!
