News
Proceeds
of crime act!!!
You
may have noticed that many auctioneers now require proof of ID
before you are able to bid. This is part of a wide ranging act
brought in by the government coming into effect in March, sneaked
in under the guise of 'money laundering and anti-terror laws'.
This
government is actually turing the country into it's own private
police and informant force.
It
is now illegal to spend more than £10,000 cash anywhere
in the country unless you can prove it's origin!
Try
spending £10K cash on a car or a bit of Georgian silver
and see the paperwork you have to fill out!
And
that's just the beginning.
An
accountant kindly gave GAUK an in site into the wide ranging,
implications of this bill.
As
far as it can be interpreted this act it means that accounts
are now under an obligation to report anything suspicious to
a new body the government has set up... and they are not allowed
to tell the client that they have been reported.
Now
you may think this is ok as you're not a criminal!
Well
you don't have to be - We read some of the heinous 'crimes' you
can now be reported for.
"If
the accountant visits your place of work and happens to over
hear you call your wife on the business line, you have to be
reported. This is a private call and cannot be claimed as business!!!"
It
appears that your account can no longer be your friend, they
are now under an obligation to disclose ANYTHING UNTOWARD.
In
practice we can't see how this can work but this is now law and
you have been warned.
We
recommend that before you discuss anything with anyone concerning
your financial dealing ask to know more about 'the proceeds of
crime bill'
This
act does not just cover accountants. The banks have for some
time now been forced to report any 'suspicious' dealings, but
this has been stepped up a gear and bank staff can get into a
lot of trouble for failing to report a whole range of 'erroneous'
transactions.
What
do the banks consider as 'dodgy dealing'?
Any
cash withdrawal or lodgment of over £5,000!
September
11 was a devastating tradegy, not only for the all the people
involved on the day, but for the rest of the world who are now
suffering the consequences.
One
media advisor was pilloried for her insensitive comment that
'it was a good day to release bad news'. If you were a little
cynical you'd say that it was a good day for the government to
swing in a raft of laws that under normal circumstances would
be thrown out at the first hearing.
You may
also ask are we now to be flagged up as potential terrorists
and criminals for calling home to tell the other half you'll
be late home?
If
you have a comment about this please

“And
Blondin said to the crowd, “Do you believe?”
Some years ago I heard a famous presenter use the story about Charles Blondin’s
tightrope walk across Niagara Falls and was so taken by the story that I did
some research.
I found the ‘full’ details and now often use this story as my ending
when giving a platform speech at a conference.
Here it is:
On the 30th June 1859 Charles Blondin (real name: Jean Francois Gravelet) the
famous tightrope walker, walked on a tightrope across Niagara Gorge.
The usual story is that he walked across Niagara Falls – but – my
research indicates that the man who owned the falls wouldn’t let Blondin
do it there and Blondin settled on walking across the Gorge instead.
Blondin and his associates had strung a hawser across the Gorge to Goat Island
in the middle of the Gorge. It was 1000 feet long and swayed 180 feet in the
air. The Niagara River in the valley below derives its name from a North American
Indian word meaning – Thunder Water- appropriately named!
A small crowd had gathered to see Blondin do this death-defying feat. Turning
to the crowd Blondin asked, “Do you believe I can walk across the tightrope
to Goat Island, 1000 feet in the wind and the rain, carrying only this long pole – and
come back safely?”
The crowd obviously didn’t know if Blondin could do it but urged him on.
(As crowds do!)
So Blondin did it! All the way there and all the way back - whilst the rope swayed
in the wind and rain. 1000 feet there – 1000 feet back.
The crowd went wild!
Blondin quietened them and asked, “Do you believe that I can walk to the
middle of the rope carrying this ball of string, lower it down to a boat in the
river below (The boat was called: The Maid in the Mist) pull up a bottle, drink
from it, throw the bottle away and come back safely?”
The crowd screamed, “We believe!”
So – Blondin did it.
Again the crowd was in uproar at this brilliant display of skill.
Blondin hushed them again and enquired, “Do you believe I can walk all
the way to Goat Island, 1000 feet and come back safely – with someone sat
on my shoulders?”
The crowded roared as one, “We believe!”
“ OK” said Blondin, “Who is it going to be?”
